Societal expectations. A need to conform. By upholding external standards of appearance and gender roles we are allowing ourselves to be judged. We are, however, not the only ones policing our conformity. We are judged by others and not just those we see in passing. Either subconsciously, or consciously, we are also criticized by our mothers, sisters, and friends. When we allow these external pressures to push us out of true we are shifted off our personal foundations. Our true form and behavior may or may not align with the contemporary idealized image of a beautiful, successful woman and mother. Clothing, such as high heels and corsets, reform the body into an unnatural shape, which may paradoxically be viewed as ideal.

How do we learn to recognize our own personal truth? To what form of measurement do we hold ourselves accountable? The media’s depictions of womanhood might skew your valuation and play on your stresses and insecurities. How do you find your own true frequency? I bring these notions to the forefront in my art using a myriad of subjects and materials. The recurring theme of transparent material contrasting the opaque is indicative of the ephemeral quality of the human body. The dichotomy between the delicate yet powerful self and the evolving roles women play, set for by societal structure, is the cornerstone of my current work.
