Students Sharpen their Leadership Skills at Model UN Conference
Submitted on December 7, 2022
Georgetown College’s Model United Nations (UN) team attended the American Model UN conference in Chicago, Illinois at the end of November. Approximately 95 colleges and universities from across the nation participated in the conference. Eleven GC students attended this year to debate, practice diplomacy, and sharpen their leadership skills.
During the fall semester, a team of GC students with a range of expertise was assembled to form a Model UN team. The team includes students with expertise in economics, science, social sciences and those with specializations in human rights, economic development, the environment, international law, journalism, and communications. After thorough research of the assigned topics, the team established positions and talking points for their assigned country of Canada.
The GC team participated in a United Nations simulation to discuss current global issues, including food access, international security, economic development, education’s relationship to democracy, and international travel issues related to public health. Each college at the conference represented a different nation, serving as delegates from their home country. Attendees gained experience in floor debate, caucusing with other delegates, and working on resolutions to the issues at hand. For many students, the Model UN conference shed light on the complexities surrounding international relations and today’s global issues.
“Traveling to Chicago for the Model UN conference was an awesome experience for everyone involved. Having the opportunity to discuss real-life topics with our peers who are studying similar subjects was an eye-opening experience that improved and diversified my thoughts about the UN and International Relations as a whole!” - Jacob Damron, Senior
“Model UN was an excellent opportunity to work with students from colleges across the country and experience how the United Nations operates and conducts itself. Without participating myself, it would be difficult to comprehend the complexities of the UN. I am so thankful for this experience.” - Garrett Boring, Sophomore
“Joining Model UN has honestly been one of the best decisions I have made during my time at GC. Not only does it teach you a lot about how the world works, but you also make lifetime memories and friendships.” - Abir El Hirch, Sophomore
