Partnership Offers Early Admission Assurance to Med School

Partnership Enables Early Admission to Med School!

Georgetown College students interested in a career as a healthcare provider in northern Kentucky will want to learn about the school’s Early Assurance Program in partnership with the University of Kentucky College of Medicine-Northern Kentucky Campus. It is offered in conjunction with NKU and St. Elizabeth Healthcare. Application to the EAP may be made in the second semester of the sophomore year.

Lauren Fazenbaker (pictured above), a Biomedical Science major from Ashland, Ky., is the first Georgetown College student to have been accepted. She will enter the program in the fall of 2020.

“When I first heard about it, I was very excited and intrigued,” she said of the opportunity. “I had never heard of a program like this. I knew I wanted to go to medical school in Kentucky, and the fact that I could know, as a sophomore, of my admittance has taken a lot of pressure off of me since I now only have to maintain a satisfactory GPA and score well on the MCAT.”

To be considered, evidence of the dedication, compassion, personal and professional bearing necessary to be a competent and caring physician is required of a student. Satisfactory academic requirements must be met and maintained as well.

“The main thing I love about the program is that they are giving me resources to help me succeed throughout my pre-med career,” Ms. Fazenbaker commented. “GC offers MCAT prep courses and shadowing opportunities, which are hard to find on your own.”

Dr. Livingston and Lauren FazenbakerAt Georgetown College, the partnership is coordinated by Tracy Livingston, Professor of Biology (pictured right with Ms. Fazenbaker). She and Dr. William Stevens, Associate Professor of Biology, work with students who apply for the EAP and guide them in meeting the requirements.

“We stress that this opportunity does limit them to applying to the NKY Campus,” explained Dr. Livingston. “We want them to be sure of their intention before applying.”

After acceptance, a student is then enrolled in Georgetown College’s Preceptorship program (Biology 260) which provides exposure to hospital and office practice as well as shadowing and mentoring experiences with physicians.

That makes perfection for Miss Fazenbaker, whose career sights are set on northern and north-central Kentucky.

On October 25 at 5 p.m., all sophomore pre-med students will get to meet and hear Dr. Steven Haist, Associate Dean at NKU-UKCOM, who will be on the Georgetown campus to explain the program. Application for admittance to the fall 2019 class opens Dec. 1. Accepted students meet at NKU during the summer following their EAP admission for a campus tour and to talk with program professors.

“We are so very happy to have GC as a partner,” commented Carol Elam, EdD, associate dean for admission and institutional advancement at UK Med. “Through the years, Georgetown College has prepared so many qualified graduates who have enrolled in the UK College of Medicine.”

Already accepted to the Early Assurance Program, Ms. Fazenbaker says she has met many of her future classmates. “Overall I am very excited to continue on with this program and attend UK Medical School at the NKU campus in the fall of 2020.”
