New Principal of Ashland Elementary Ready for Challenge Ahead

Submitted on July 20, 2020

John Moore, recently named Principal of Ashland Elementary in Lexington, Kentucky, is taking many lessons these days from his time achieving his principal certification at Georgetown College. “Along with the coursework itself, the online format allowed me to have a first-hand experience with distant learning,” said Moore. “The methods the professors utilized for online communication, presentations, and feedback have become adopted practices of my own as we navigate through this unprecedented time in education.”

Moore was named principal of Ashland Elementary in late June. Prior to his new position, he spent years in the classroom teaching at Booker T. Washington Elementary. He would later serve as Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support Coach and Administrative Dean at Coventry Oak Elementary. He has also served as a safe crisis management trainer in Fayette County Public Schools since 2019.

His prior experience and education, including achieving his principal certification at Georgetown College, prepared him for this unprecedented time in education. “As the principal of Ashland during these unprecedented times, safety protocols and developing clear plans for instructional practices are my primary concerns,” he said.

Along with these primary concerns, his long-term goals for the school include “developing a culture and attitude of excellence, increasing family and community engagement, focused professional development for staff, and intentional goal setting for all stakeholders.”

When asked about his time at Georgetown College and how it made an impact on him, he was effusive in his praise for the dedicated faculty members who invest in the next generation of great educators and teacher-leaders. “All of the professors throughout my certification process were readily available mentors and were always more than willing to provide support. Dr. Goins stood out to me because of his dedication to the field of education, his wit, and his method of presentation. Dr. G opened my eyes to multiple underutilized social media platforms, and through this, I feel like we are still ‘connected.’

Moore’s first year as principal of Ashland Elementary will certainly be a unique one, but he’s more than ready for the challenge.
