New Online Elementary Certification Program

Georgetown College will offer an online elementary teaching certification program beginning in Fall 2023. The 30-credit hour program will meet the needs of aspiring teachers who already have a bachelor’s degree. Admitted students will pursue elementary teaching certification while earning a master’s degree. With courses taught by experienced educators, the Georgetown College Master of Arts with Initial Certification (MAIC) elementary program features supervised clinical experiences in candidates’ local school settings.
Elementary certification was declared a critical shortage area for Kentucky in 2023, and elementary teachers are in demand across the country. Georgetown College’s educator preparation programs are approved by the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board, and the college is nationally accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation. Information about the portability of Kentucky teaching certificates is available from the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC) at www.nasdtec.edu.
Similar to other Georgetown College graduate education programs, courses will be offered in a combination of 7.5- and 15-week formats in a cohort model. Cohorts encourage collegiality and a sense of community among students. Georgetown College’s graduate education programs are competitively priced on a per-credit-hour basis. Several forms of financial aid are available for students pursuing certification at Georgetown.
Providing a cost-effective route to elementary certification at the graduate level has been a Georgetown College Education Department goal for several years, according to Dr. Kim Walters-Parker, Dean of Education. “We have excellent faculty and support staff to ensure we provide the highest quality academic courses, clinical experiences, and personal connections for every candidate. We leverage our online teaching experience to benefit our candidates and the students they will teach.”
The Georgetown College MAIC elementary certification program is open to all applicants who meet the state of Kentucky’s admission requirements as long as space allows. There is no admissions test requirement.
