Georgetown Colleges Launches Peer Counseling Program
Submitted on February 9, 2023
For some students, confiding in their peers about stress, anxiety, or depression is more comfortable than talking to adults. To provide an additional outlet, the Psychology Department and the Counseling Center at Georgetown College are launching a new Peer Counseling program on campus. The purpose of this program is to provide a private space for students to express thoughts and emotions and to learn new coping skills.
“Emotional wellness is critical as students navigate their college experience,” says GC’s lead counselor Bethany Farley. “They are juggling multiple responsibilities at once and it can be overwhelming. We want to provide them with tools and resources that can help.”
Peer Counselors are current Georgetown students who are trained in basic micro-counseling skills and active listening. Peer counseling sessions provide a safe space for students to express themselves and get support from a peer with similar lived experiences. To set up a Peer Counseling appointment, students can email [email protected].
Peer counseling does not replace professional therapy. If you have questions about GC’s Peer Counseling program or would like to know about additional mental health resources, contact Bethany Farley in the Counseling Center at [email protected].
