Submitted on January 20, 2025
On Monday, January 20, Georgetown College hosted a Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration to honor one of the greatest Civil Rights leaders in our history. Guest speaker Dr. Robert Michael Franklin, Jr. was the guest speaker for this year's program to speak on the theme "A Legacy of Hope and Healing."
Dr. Robert Michael Franklin, Jr. is the James T. and Berta R. Laney Professor in Moral Leadership and Senior Advisor to the President of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He is also president emeritus of Morehouse College, where he served as the tenth president from 2007 to 2012. Franklin graduated from Morehouse College in 1975 with a degree in political science and religion. He went on to earn his M.Div. at Harvard Divinity School in 1978 and a Ph.D. in ethics and society, and religion and social sciences in 1985 from the University of Chicago.
The celebration began in front of the Cralle Student Center on College Street with a march down Main Street and back around to the campus of Georgetown College. Students, faculty, staff, and community members braved below freezing temperatures to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy. After the march concluded, a program was held at First Baptist Church in Georgetown with special messages, music, and prayer.
Special thanks to First Baptist Church of Georgetown, the City of Georgetown, the Scott County Judge Executive Office, and the Georgetown Scott County NAACP for sponsoring this event with us!
