History & Information
For 168 years there have been Bands at Georgetown College, making it the oldest college or university band program in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The first band was formed at GC in the spring of 1844 to perform for the spring commencement exercises. A photograph exists of this band with the historic epitaph "Music for all Occasions". The Tiger Bands of today strive to live up to this extraordinary legacy.
Drawing Band Scholars from KY, OH, IN, IL, TN, WV, FL, TX, NE, PA, MD and MI who are involved in a plethora of majors, today's Tiger Bands strive to be a focal point of excellence, excitement and enthusiasm for the entire campus community.
For over two centuries, Georgetown College has been recognized for its distinctive tradition of academic excellence. As a community of "scholars developing scholars" Georgetown is nationally acclaimed for its rich traditions, high ideals, superb faculty and challenging curriculum. Ongoing recognition which the College has received from the Carnegie Foundation, and listings as one of the top liberal arts colleges in America by US News & World Reports and college guides such as Peterson's and Barron's attest to the "excellence" represented by our college family. We are very glad to be a part of that tradition, and are working very diligently so that our Tiger Bands may be a continuing source of "PRIDE" for our entire campus community.
Located on 104 gently rolling acres in the heart of the Kentucky Bluegrass country, Georgetown boasts many fine antebellum buildings on its historic and scenic campus. Additionally, the nationally acclaimed East Campus Athletic, Conference and Housing Complex, the fabulous, Anna Ashcraft Ensor Learning Resource Center, and the Anne Wright Wilson Fine Arts Building and Gallery are helping to take Georgetown into the new millennium. As home to approximately 1850 undergraduate and graduate students, Georgetown College indeed represents a historic and vital seat of learning learning.
The Tiger Bands, as part of the Department of Music, have and long and enduring tradition of excellence, based upon the important "Five-Fold Band Tenets" of: Academic Excellence, Musical Achievement, Spiritual Values, Leadership Skills and Commitment to Georgetown College. Our Tiger Bands strive to remain true to the historic spirit, mission and intent of Georgetown College. Our Band Scholars are renowned for their exceptional academic prowess, musical participation and serving as student leaders across campus.
The primary ensembles of the Tiger Band Program are the Symphonic Band and the "Fighting Tiger Grrr...Pep Band" [FTGPB]. Band Scholarships are available for any students electing to participate in any of our Tiger Bands. Scholarships range from $500.00 to $10,000.00 per academic year and are renewable annually based upon suitable academic progress and successful participation as a member of our Tiger Bands.
In prospective Band Scholars and members of our Tiger Band Family, we look carefully for young people who are exemplars of the "Five-Fold Band Tenets". The ongoing success of our Tiger Bands is based upon our Band Scholars being exemplars of these traits and widely recognized as some of the most outstanding students on our campus.
Our Tiger Bands are comprised of students representing a multitude of major and minor disciplines with a particularly high concentration [nearly two-thirds] being either pre-med or pre-law majors.
