Participate in a study abroad program while earning credits toward graduation. These programs involve traveling to international schools or taking classes with GC faculty abroad. Study abroad courses are available in nearly every academic field. The Office of International Programs works closely with students to tailor a study abroad plan that aligns with their interests. Additionally, in partnership with the Office of Financial Planning, we help students find the program that best fits their academic interests and budget.

Semester/Academic Year Programs
Studying abroad for a semester or an academic year offers the classic experience of immersion in a new culture. It allows you to genuinely live in your host country(ies) and gain a memorable international experience. Generally, a semester or year abroad is the most affordable option and often enables you to apply federal or state financial aid to cover costs.
Short-Term Programs
Short-term programs enable students to study abroad during the Winter Term, May Term, or during summer break. This choice suits students who cannot commit to a full semester abroad because of athletic or academic obligations. However, these programs are typically entirely self-funded, as state and federal financial aid usually does not cover them.

Can anyone study abroad?
Yes, all GC students in good academic standing are eligible to study abroad. Though some programs have specific requirements. Click here for more on specific programs.
Am I still a GC student if I study abroad?
Yes
When should I start planning to study abroad?
Freshman and sophomore year.
How much does it cost?
Costs vary by program, destination, and duration. Other factors that may affect costs include airfare, meals, accommodations, medical insurance, tuition, administrative fees, credit hours earned, excursions and tours, independent travel, and textbooks or class materials.
NOTE: Students typically DO NOT pay GC tuition or fees while abroad.
Can I use Financial Aid?
Financial Aid is typically not available for summer or winter term programs. However, students may typically use their federal and/or state aid for a semester or academic year abroad. You will meet with the Office of Financial Planning during the study abroad process to see exactly what financial aid may apply to your time abroad.
Can I use my Georgetown Scholarships to study abroad?
Your Georgetown College scholarships are not typically applicable to time abroad.

Note: Georgetown College policy prohibits students from studying abroad in countries with an active US State Department Travel Warning. Visit the US State Department website for an up-to-date list. Georgetown College strongly suggests that students do not study abroad in countries with an active Travel Alert.
Do I need to know a foreign language?
No. However, there are programs that are taught in the native language for those who want to experience and practice a foreign language.
What are the requirements?
Studying abroad takes careful planning, but the process is relatively simple, and our Director of International Studies is there to help with every step.
Will my credits transfer?
Yes, the credits you earn will transfer to Georgetown College and count toward your graduation requirements. Simply meet with the Director of International Studies BEFORE going abroad to ensure the credit transfer process goes smoothly.
To have credits count toward your major, minor, or general education requirements, get approval from your faculty advisor or department chair. Otherwise, use the credits as electives.
The quality points will not be calculated into your overall GPA unless your course(s) abroad are taught by a GC professor or you are participating in the GC Oxford Program.
