This scholarship is available through a new partnership with Teach KY, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to support teachers seeking their initial certification. Before this partnership began, Teach KY only worked with individuals across the US willing to relocate to Kentucky and work at Jefferson County Public Schools. Now, Georgetown College and Teach KY are working to help individuals already living in KY who are ready to take the next step and become teachers. What does TKY require to apply for the scholarship?
TKY has a short application and a 2-step interview process.
Step 1 of the TKY interview will be a Zoom meeting/interview, which usually takes place in the spring.
Step 2 is an in-person event at Georgetown College, in late spring (May), where TKY can meet you face-to-face, explain the scholarship, answer questions, and possibly recruit or participate in an initial interview with the district you would like to teach in. The event will also include a meal and a cohort event. The team will review data from both the Zoom interview and the in-person event and select recipients for the TKY@GC scholarship. Applicants will be notified by email if/and when they are chosen.
What is option 6/opt 6?
Option 6 (often written as opt 6) is a popular university-based alternative route to certification for individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree and want to earn their initial certification. Candidates will work full-time as the teacher of record in a KY school district while concurrently enrolled in an approved educator preparation program (like the GC MAIC). The temporary certificate can typically be renewed annually (valid for up to three to five years depending on specific program guidelines) while the candidate completes their required coursework and final certification requirements.
Does GC provide paperwork to secure a job?
Once you have been admitted to the program at Georgetown College, you will be issued an LOE (letter of eligibility) that shows the program you have been admitted to. This document is required by the school district to hire you as an OPT 6/temporarily certified teacher. The LOE is valid for 1 school year (generally from July to June). The position you are hired for is contracted for 1 school year, and the school/district must offer you the position for a second year. GC will provide the second LOE needed to work.
If I apply to GC, get accepted, and interview with TKY, how is the scholarship awarded?
Teach KY, funded by AmeriCorps, awards the Segal Education Award of $14,600 to selected applicants, fully covering the master’s program at Georgetown College. It is disbursed in 2 installments: $7,300 at the end of your first year and another $7,300 at the end of your second year (when you will have completed the program)! Note that you must initially “pay” for the graduate program with a FAFSA loan, and the scholarship payments are then applied to that loan after each year. You will not receive a check for the scholarship.
If chosen for the scholarship, what happens next?
If you have been admitted into the program and you are a chosen recipient of the TKY@GC Scholarship, your “start” time has 2 steps.
STEP 1 – there will be a summer cohort training called the STRIPES Institute, which requires full attendance. The STRIPES Institute is 2 full weeks, Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and 1 full week virtual, Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM*. To remain eligible for the scholarship, you must attend both in-person and virtual sessions. Specific dates and times will be determined and announced closer to the event, but it will typically take place in July. Georgetown College will provide room and board for any applicant who lives more than an hour from campus, plus all food during the in-person training.
STEP 2 – Graduate classes start mid-August. The graduate program is all online, and classes are taken 1 at a time, so you can juggle teaching, graduate classes, and life.
Is there anything else that I need to know?
If you successfully complete the STRIPES Institute, GC will distribute a $1,500 stipend. This stipend is given only if the participant has attended all three weeks of the STRIPES Institute and secured a teaching position by the designated date.
