Clubs, Organizations, Fraternities, and Sororities

Georgetown College has four chapters of national sororities, four chapters of national fraternities, and one local association to operate on campus. The Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils oversee and set guidelines for their respective organizations.

Members are invited to live in the residence hall assigned to their organization when space is available.

Formal recruitment happens in the first three weeks of the Fall Semester. It’s a time for Potential New Members (PNM) to learn about the organization’s purpose, goals, requirements, and traditions. Recruitment and potential new member period activities must not interfere with or jeopardize the PNM’s academic standing or other college responsibilities, nor interfere with the academic or social lives of non-participating students.

National organization guidelines, state law, and College policy prohibit hazing. Hazing is defined by the College and by the national organizations of all local Greek chapters as:

Any action taken or situation created to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule. Such activities and situations include paddling in any form; creating excessive fatigue; inflicting physical and psychological shocks; quests, treasure hunts, and scavenger hunts; road trips; other nonproductive activities conducted outside the confines of the organization’s residence hall; wearing apparel that is conspicuous and not normally in good taste; engaging in public stunts and buffoonery; morally degrading or humiliating games and activities; late work sessions that interfere with scholastic activities or other College responsibilities; and any other activities that are not consistent with local or state statutes or the regulations, policies, mission, and purpose of the College.

Pledge activities must not interfere with academic programs or any other College responsibility, nor infringe on the rights of the student body or any other member of the College community. Georgetown College does not recognize any special period, often referred to as inspiration, invitation, or “hell” week, during which activities are frequently intensified to the point that they become an obstacle to meeting academic or other College responsibilities. Any organization that violates pledging regulations shall be subject to penalties up to and including suspension from further operation at Georgetown College. Penalties include fines, limitations on pledging, and removal from designated residence halls. Hazing accountability applies not only to Greek Organizations but also to anyone on campus involved in hazing.

Fraternity Recruitment

To be eligible for recruitment, a student must be enrolled full-time at Georgetown College and not currently or previously initiated into another NPC or IFC chapter. All Potential New Members (PNMs) must register online through OmegaFi and submit a $35 registration fee.

GC’s dirtiest tradition—students battle to see who can win the most challenges and get the filthiest. Think food fights and tug o’ war in the mud!

Every spring and fall before finals, students are treated to a huge breakfast buffet in the Caf from 10 p.m. until midnight, served by faculty and staff. The College President will be there, too!

Songfest is an annual spring tradition where students compete with skits they write and perform. Students can show off their acting, singing, dancing, and more!

Our Christmas tradition—a joyous service followed by candlelight singing around Giddings Circle as the campus Christmas lights come on.

Forfeit
Teams that cancel less than 24 hours in advance, do not have enough members to field a complete team*, or simply do not show will forfeit. Two forfeits will eliminate a team from the season and tournament play. If a team is eliminated from a major (minor) sport due to forfeits, that team is ineligible to participate in the next major (minor) sport. *Two players must be present at game time, and the required number of players must be present within five minutes of game start (or the time set by the on-site Supervisor) to avoid a forfeit.

Default
Teams may forfeit up to two games and still be eligible for the tournament if they call the supervisor and the opposing team captain at least 24 hours before the scheduled game time. This forfeit will not allow the team to receive the 20 (or 10 for minor sports) points to be added to the All Sports total (see All Sports Point System), but it will allow them to participate in tournament play.

Reschedule
Teams that call in at least 48 hours before game time will be given two opportunities to reschedule their game (if the season schedule allows).

Sportsmanship Conduct for Intramurals
All players are expected to show good sportsmanship. If a team or player is consistently causing problems, the player or team captain may be asked to meet with the Intramurals Coordinator to discuss the incident(s) and their continued participation in GC Intramurals. The Intramurals Coordinator reserves the right to suspend a player or team from one or all sports.

Players ejected from a game must see the Intramurals Coordinator the next day to discuss the incident. They are immediately suspended for one game and cannot participate in any IM sport until they have met with the Intramurals Coordinator. Team captains must also report to the Intramurals Coordinator to address team violations or misconduct. Additionally, teams and players are responsible for ensuring their fans and coaches do not abuse officials or opponents.

Eligibility

1. No more than 25% of the team players may have been on a related sports team within the past year. (e.g., 5th year seniors, sophomores who played their freshman year, on JV the previous year, etc.)
2. JV players, but teams may have only two on the roster and only one on the court at a time. If two players are on the court, the team will forfeit immediately.
3. Players currently on a varsity team, or who have played on a varsity team for two seasons or more, are ineligible for the affiliated sports.

A player may be on only one team. Team members may not move from one team to another after the midseason or playoffs. Roster changes are allowed up to the 3rd game. A player can change teams during this period but not move back.
Player Outside of Residence Hall
A team that wants to have someone play for them who is not part of their organization or does not live in their residence hall may email a request to the Intramural staff. The letter must explain why that person should be permitted to play on their team and still be considered a point team. Submit the letter at least 24 hours before rosters are due. If the request is denied, teams may still play with the person, but the person cannot receive points. The person is still eligible for champion t-shirts, however.

Faculty/Staff (F/S)
All F/S members are encouraged to participate in Intramurals. S/he must play for a Faculty/Staff team unless:

1. there happens to be no F/S team playing for points; or
2. s/he is a respective resident of a point organization.

If either of these applies, an F/S member may join a point team, provided the F/S member is considered a “Player Outside of a Residence Hall.” (See rule above.)

Note: If an F/S member wishes to play for a non-point-team, s/he may do so even if there is an F/S team.

*Alumni are not allowed to participate in Intramural Events unless they are current faculty or staff members, or unless otherwise specified.

Protests
Protests must be filed within 12 hours with the IM Supervisor or the Intramurals Coordinator. A decision on the protest will be made promptly, and both teams will be notified promptly. Protests will not be allowed regarding officials’ judgment calls.

Supervisors
IM Supervisors are selected each spring through the Emerging Leaders program.

Referees & Scorekeepers
Interested students may become referees and scorekeepers by contacting the Intramurals Coordinator at 502.863.8038.

Many of our game officials are students. Although we strive to have the best officials at every game, they sometimes make mistakes. Each year, our department receives complaints about officials, and we take them constructively. We will continue striving to bring the most talented officials on campus to work for IM and ask that each participant use good judgment and exercise patience when dealing with our officials.

Participating in IM Sports is completely voluntary for everyone. Please keep in mind that Georgetown College cannot cover any medical expenses, such as doctor visits, hospital stays, or ambulance services, if someone gets injured while enjoying the program. To get involved, students are kindly asked to sign an Assumption of Risk/Waiver beforehand. We appreciate your understanding and hope you have a great time participating!

Participating in activities organized by Georgetown College staff and student staff involves risks, including the possibility of serious injury, paralysis, or death. The college does not offer insurance coverage for medical or hospital expenses resulting from injuries sustained during the Georgetown College Recreation Program. Additionally, Georgetown College does not cover ambulance or transportation costs for students seeking medical treatment after an injury.
