COSTS

OVERVIEW

The costs to attend GC represent our best estimate. Here is a helpful overview of what this chart represents! The figures are averages and might not match your exact expenses. The total cost of attendance consists of both direct charges and indirect expenses. Direct charges are the actual fees the college bills, like tuition, fees, housing, and meal plans. Indirect expenses include estimated costs for books, supplies, transportation, and personal needs. Since the college doesn’t bill for these indirect expenses, it’s a good idea to budget for them separately so you’re fully prepared.

HOW TO PAY FOR YOUR GC EDUCATION

There are many ways to pay for college, and it can be very confusing. Below, we lay out some options available to help you to pay for your college education.

FAFSA

FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Although the title implies that the form is only for “federal” aid, it is also used to determine your eligibility for state grants and additional college grants.

To apply for need-based assistance, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and be admitted to Georgetown College. The FAFSA form is available directly from the Department of Education’s website via the button below. If you list our school code (001964) on the FAFSA, Georgetown College will receive the information electronically.

We encourage ALL STUDENTS to complete the FAFSA.

WHAT DOES THE FAFSA FORM ASK?
Basically, the form collects financial details about the student and their family. It becomes available for completion after October 1 of a senior high school student’s year. For Kentucky residents, it’s particularly important to fill out the form promptly after October 1.

The FAFSA is probably more intimidating than it is complicated. One of the Financial Planning staff members will be glad to sit down with you and walk you through the FAFSA. Except in unusual circumstances, we can help a family complete the FAFSA in 30 minutes.

HOW TO RECEIVE ASSISTANCE
Admitted students get an award letter detailing assistance options. By checking the acceptance of each type of assistance and signing and returning the award letter to the Student Financial Planning Office, the account will be credited with the award amount.

EXCEPTIONS:
Federal Work-Study isn’t credited; it’s an earned award. Georgetown aid depends on full-time, residential status. Dropping full-time or off-campus living waivers below adjusted aid. All aid is limited to four years (eight semesters)

IRS DATA RETRIEVAL TOOL
Filing the FAFSA is easier with the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. Use this tool to link your FAFSA to your IRS tax return and automatically pull in your tax information. If you have trouble using this tool, you may request a tax return transcript from the IRS. Below are instructions for both processes.

Once the IRS has validated your identification, your previous year’s Federal Income Tax information will be transferred. Note that as an enhanced security measure, you will not be able to see your tax information. However, you will get a confirmation that the data was transferred successfully.

IRS Data Retrieval Tool Instruction for Parents and Students

  • Tax filers can transfer their tax information directly from the IRS to the FAFSA with a few clicks.
  • Go to studentaid.gov
  • Click on Login under Returning User
  • Enter student FSA ID as requested
  • Select Make Correction to FAFSA
  • Click on the Financial Information Tab
  • Change the drop-down box from Will File to Already Completed
  • Enter Parent FSA ID and click on Link to IRS
  • The next screen will inform you that you are leaving FAFSA on the WEB. Click OK to continue.
  • The IRS.gov screen will appear next. Enter the information requested.
  • Click Submit.
  • Once the IRS has validated your identification, your prior-prior year’s Federal Income Tax information will be transferred. As an enhanced security measure, you will not be able to view your tax information. However, you will receive confirmation that the data was transferred successfully.
  • Follow the instructions to return to FAFSA on the Web to complete your FAFSA
  • Remember to electronically sign and resubmit the FAFSA

IRS Tax Return Transcript Request Instructions for Parents and Students

Tax filers can request that a transcript be mailed to them, free of charge, by ordering online.

  • Go to www.irs.gov
  • Under the Tools section, click “Get Transcript for My Tax Records”
  • Click “Get Transcript by Mail”
  • Create an Account and follow the instructions
  • Make sure to request a Tax RETURN Transcript and not a Tax Account
  • Transcript. Once you can receive the transcript, mail or email the document to Georgetown College, Office of Student Financial Planning, 400 East College Street, Georgetown, KY 40324, or email
    to [email protected]
SCHOLARSHIP AND HONORS
PAYMENT PLAN

The college offers a 5-month payment plan by semester that allows you to make your payments for the semester’s charges (not covered by other aid) in interest-free installments. There is an annual enrollment fee for this program. For more information, please contact Student Accounts at 502.863.8700.

Georgetown College receives no tax support. Tuition covers only part of expenses, with over 30% funded by endowment, gifts, grants, alumni, and friends, helping keep costs low.

GC administers an extensive financial assistance program; no prospective student should overlook Georgetown College solely for financial reasons until they have fully investigated the amount and types of aid available.

GC is committed to providing excellence in higher education for all students. One way the College fulfills its mission is by investing in each student.

ADDITIONAL STUDENT LOANS

Sometimes, the Federal Student Loans a student receives by filing the FAFSA aren’t enough to cover what’s needed. Lenders offer additional student loans—often referred to as private or alternative loans—based on the borrower’s and co-signer’s credit. In almost all cases, a student will need to have the loan co-signed. The college recommends that you consult with a trusted bank or other lending institution to determine whether this type of financing may be an option for you.

RENEWAL OF ASSISTANCE INFORMATION

All aid offered by Georgetown is for four full years (eight semesters). Academic scholarships of less than half-tuition require that you maintain a cumulative GPA consistent with the college’s standards for satisfactory academic progress, as outlined in the college catalog. Scholarships of more than half-tuition require a cumulative GPA of 3.3.
