Griffin joins the storied Tiger program from another NAIA school strong in volleyball tradition, Olivet Nazarene University, where he served as assistant coach for a total of seven seasons in two stints. He replaces Jeff Hulsmeyer, who after two seasons with the Tigers, accepted a position at Kansas State late last month.
“Everyone at Georgetown has made me feel very welcomed and the expectations of success at one of the premier volleyball programs in the NAIA is not unfamiliar,” said Griffin.
Ward sees in Griffin a young, yet prepared, coach who ready to hit the campus running.
“While it was a disappointing loss when Coach Hulsmeyer decided to leave, we know Nick will pick up where Jeff left off because of his experience,” said Ward. “He comes to us from a very successful program at a school that has many institutional and athletic similarities, so he knows what it takes.”
Griffin inherits a team that finished No. 5 in the final NAIA Coaches’ Poll last season and put together a strong Elite Eight finish in the national tournament. The Tigers return seven seniors, including All-American outside hitter Erica Janszen.
“This is the ideal situation to be coming into,” said Griffin. “I know that after meeting and talking with the seniors that their expectations and commitment level will make this transition very easy. Having a roster full of talent and experience, as well as a strong class of newcomers will make for an exciting season.”
“I love pressure, I love competition and I love tradition and those are exactly the things that Georgetown has and what I look to continue and enhance as we go forward,” said Griffin.
Looking ahead, Griffin has already studied the schedule to size up the competition his team will face and admits, there is a tough schedule ahead. “We will be tested early and often and it will be an exciting year. Everything is in place and it is my job to pull it all together.”
The Tigers report back to campus for preseason training on Aug. 9 in preparation for their first match on Aug. 28 at the Savannah College of Art & Design Invitational in Savannah, Ga.
