Georgetown College Awarded Grant to Explore Institutional History

Submitted on December 12, 2022

The Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) has awarded Georgetown College an institutional project grant for $36,000 to be used over the next two years. Georgetown College will utilize these funds to undertake a research project examining significant institutional changes over the last thirty years.

These grants are awarded to colleges and universities that are members of the Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education (NetVUE), a program administered by CIC. Grant funding launches projects that help colleges re-examine and reframe their institutional commitments in ways that balance their history, identity, and heritage with attention to their present circumstances. Professor of Philosophy Dr. Roger Ward is leading the project for Georgetown College.

“I think the reflection and writing from this project will highlight the amazing impact we have on students and families as an institution of higher learning committed to its Christian mission,” says Ward. “We have a story to be proud of, and some parts of that story are not well known or even written yet. I look forward to hearing from the many voices that make up the history of Georgetown College.”

Georgetown College will launch a research project in 2023 to examine significant institutional changes over the last thirty years. These include a re-alignment with Kentucky Baptists, success in creating racial diversity, financial and enrollment challenges, and changes in leadership. Throughout this period, the resilience of the College’s faculty/staff and academic quality has remained strong, supported by the Christian vocation of the College. The final products of this project will include a book of historical and evaluative essays, short-form and long-form video interviews with key figures in the College’s history, and a commissioned outdoor art installation. Upon completion, the content will be accessible on the College’s website at www.georgetowncollege.edu to anyone seeking to learn more about the history of Georgetown College.
