AIKCU’s Second Annual Diversity and Inclusion Summit Held at Georgetown College

Georgetown College hosted the second annual Diversity and Inclusion Summit, organized by the Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities (AIKCU) on Tuesday, November 14. Students, faculty, staff, and community members from across the state assembled to discuss diversity and inclusion issues within the college environment.

 “Georgetown College is committed to being an inclusive college where everyone feels welcome,” says Georgetown College President Rosemary Allen. “Listening to the perspectives of others is so important to understand the challenges we need to address moving forward. The Diversity and Inclusion Summit is a chance for us to expand our knowledge and learn from each other.” 

Sessions were held throughout the day on topics like hiring a diverse workforce, reaching underserved students, and diversity communication. In addition, four college presidents formed a special panel to discuss ideas for building and fostering a diverse and inclusive campus culture. Dr. OJ Oleka, President of AIKCU, moderated the special panel. Presidents featured on the panel included Dr. Rosemary Allen of Georgetown College, Brien Lewis from Transylvania University, Tori Murden McClure from Spalding University, and Dr. Burton Webb from the University of Pikeville. 

Additional speakers and panelists for the summit included Executive Director and Academic Dean for the Kentucky Governor’s Scholar Program, Dr. Aristofranes Cedeno; Lindsey Wilson College student Breanna Embry, University of Pikeville student Carrington Russell, Berea College student Drevon Barks; Executive Director of Student Involvement at University of Louisville, Dr. Quanta Taylor; Executive Director of the International Book Project, Lisa Fryman; Cultural Literacy Coordinator of the International Book Project, Joy Clarissa Saavedra; Senior Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion at Humana, Carolyn Tandy; Chief Diversity Officer at Spalding University, Dr. Steven Kniffley, Jr.; Senior Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer at Brown-Forman, Crystal Peterson; Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer at Bellarmine University, Dr. Tomarra Adams; Associate Dean for Career Readiness at Centre College, Joy Anderson Asher; Associate Professor and Chair of Communications at Berea College, Dr. Kennaria Brown; Director of the Office for Student Success at Midway University, Mackenzie Hanes; Director of Identity and Inclusion for Bellarmine University, Dr. Emily Howard; Bellarmine University student Prince Mugabo; and Bellarmine University student Alex Baldon.
