Harper Gatton Leadership Medallion Program

Our mission is to equip students with the knowledge and ability that is necessary to be successful leaders who exhibit integrity in their current and future leadership roles.

KCLC 2009

The Harper Gatton Leadership Program is once again offering for students to attend the Kentucky Collegiate Leadership Conference which will be held on October 3rd.  Keynote speakers this year are Colman Elridge, Executive Assistant to Governor Steve Beshear and Executive Director of the Governor’s Office of Faith Based Initiatives along with Husein Kitabwalla, President, Retail Brand Group LLC.  There is limited space available so please contact John Banter if you are interested in attending.  (Click on the logo to visit the KCLC website)

Program Objectives

  • Provide students with a foundational understanding of the theories and practices of leadership.
  • Offer students the opportunities to develop and enhance a personal understanding of leadership and how that affects themselves, others, and the community.
  • Assist students in gaining and understanding their leadership positions and experiences.
  • Develop within the students the understanding and the ability of how to lead organizations using various leadership methods.
  • Produce globally-minded leaders, who are able to lead in cross-cultural leadership situations.

Program Requirements

Phase I: GSS280: Leadership Theory Class

  • The class will teach the various leadership theories
  • Lay out the theoretical, philosophical, and conceptual foundations of leadership
  • Describe cultural and gender influences on leadership
  • Unveil the difference between leadership and management
  • Offered both Fall and Spring semesters

Phase II: Developmental Workshops

  • 6 Personal Development Workshop Credits must be earned
    Examples:
    • Resume & Cover Letter
    • Goal Setting
    • Networking
    • Time Management
  • 6 Organizational Development Workshop Credits
    Examples:
    • Team Building
    • Conflict Management & Resolution
    • Power and Empowering in Leadership
    • Group Development & Dynamics

Phase III: Leadership Experience and Application

  • Students must be involved in at least 2 Campus organizations with a leadership role in 1 of the organizations.
    • Students must observe the organizational dynamics of 1 of the organizations they are involved in and write a 2 page reflection paper to be turned in at the conclusion of their observation.
  • Community Service
    • Students must either complete 1 long term service project (minimum of 2 semesters)
      OR
    • Students must complete 5 short term service projects
      (PROJECTS MAY BE COMPLETED INDIVIDUALLY OR IN A GROUP)

Phase IV: Developmental Workshops

  • 6 Personal Development Workshop Credits must be earned

    • Supervision and Motivation
  • 6 Organizational Development Workshop Credits
    Examples
    • Cross-cultural Leadership
    • Community Development
    • Developing and Maintaining Trust
    • Adventure Leadership

Once the four phases are completed, a student will be eligible to receive the Harper Gatton Leadership Medallion at graduation.

In order to receive the Leadership Medallion, a student must have a 2.5 GPA upon graduation.
