Tuesday, September 7 at 11:00 in John Hill Chapel, John Long, Chairman of the World Games 2010 Foundation and CEO of the United States Equestrian Federation will speak about the upcoming World Games, the history of the Games, how Kentucky won the bid, the disciplines that will be represented and the economic impact on both the local economy as well as the state economy. He will also speak to the logistics of planning such a massive event. This CEP/Nexus event will count for 1 Organizational Development credit toward the Harper Gatton Program.

Thursday, September 9 from 4-7 pm at the Office of Diversity, the Harper Gatton Leadership Program, UNG, the Office of Diversity, Ambassadors of Diversity, Bishop Scholars, and the Global Scholars Program will host a Welcome Back Fish Fry. This is a social event for the College’s Special Programs and will be worth 1 Personal Development credit toward HG. Please feel free to welcome friends who may be interested in the Harper Gatton Program to this event.

Tuesday, October 12 at 11:00 in John Hill Chapel, Dr. Bill Bevins (’78) returns to Georgetown College to share his experience as a medical educator in Kenya. There he began to serve with the Institute of Family Medicine, which is dedicated to helping develop primary care in sub-Saharan Africa. Bill will share more about his experiences and his focus on improving medical care through education of health care providers, thus contributing to humanity, and as an outgrowth of his Christian faith. This CEP/Nexus event will count as 1 Personal Development credit toward Harper Gatton.

Thursday, October 28 at 11:00 (location TBD), Georgetown College’s Director of Development, Roy Lowdenback will share how to fundraise properly. He will share his experiences as a student and professional fundraising and offer Harper Gatton students the chance to do some fundraising for the program. This event will count as 1 Organizational Development credit toward Harper Gatton. The fundraising portion of this event will count for 2 additional OD credits.

Thursday, October 28, Harper Gatton students along with Global Scholars will have the opportunity to visit UPS’ Worldport facility at the Louisville International Airport. During this tour, students will meet with Ted Lytle, UPS’ Director of International Air Operations. This opportunity counts for 1 Organizational Development credit with the Harper Gatton program.

Tuesday, November 9 from 5-7 pm in the Hall of Fame Room, GAC along with the Harper Gatton Leadership Program will host an Etiquette Dinner with Mrs. Jan Crouch. This will allow everyone to know how to properly handle themselves in any formal dinner situation. This event will be worth 1 Personal Development credit toward Harper Gatton.

2009-2010 Academic Year

Thursday, September 17 at 11:00 am in the Hall of Fame Room. This will be our first Harper Gatton meeting of the semester with the topic of “Harper Gatton and Student Leadership.” We will overview the Harper Gatton Leadership Program for any interested students and discuss why it is important to develop your leadership skills while in college. This meeting will be lead by John Banter and will be worth 2 Personal Development credits toward the Harper Gatton transcript.

Saturday, September 26 at 9:00 am to Sunday September 27 at 1:30 pm is IMPACT, the Georgetown College Student Leadership Summit. This summit will directly affect how you lead your organization on our campus and will also provide you tools as you become a leader in our society. This retreat is designed for current student leaders and students wanting to strengthen their leadership skills. It will consist of workshops, small group discussions, reflections, worship service, and opportunities to network. SGA and Student Life are sponsoring the event, so there is no cost to you. Students attending the entire event will receive one Nexus/CEP credit and 3 Organizational Development credits toward their Harper Gatton transcript.

Saturday, October 3, 2009 9:00 – 4:00 The Harper Gatton Leadership Program is once again offering for students to attend the Kentucky Collegiate Leadership Conference which will be held on October 3rd. Keynote speakers this year are Colman Elridge, Executive Assistant to Governor Steve Beshear and Executive Director of the Governor’s Office of Faith Based Initiatives along with Husein Kitabwalla, President, Retail Brand Group LLC. Saturday, October 3-6 – Leadership In Action Trip – The Harper Gatton Leadership Program is starting a new initiative we are calling Leadership In Action (LIA). LIA will offer students in the Harper Gatton Leadership Program an opportunity to see leadership first hand being enacted in both the public and private sectors. These opportunities will allow Harper Gatton students the chance to see leaders in action and give them face time with these leaders. These trips will also allow Harper Gatton students the opportunity to put their leadership skills into action themselves working with non-profit organizations to offer service to those communities. We will also be meeting with Congressman Ben Chandler and touring the Capitol with Senator Mitch McConnell’s office.

Monday, October 19 at 4:00 pm in Giddings Circle (unless raining) will be Sergeant Mark Metcalf with the National Guard to lead us in a talk on “What is a leader?” This is being offered in collaboration with the Graves Center for Calling and Career and students who participate will receive 2 Personal Development credits toward the HG transcript.

Monday, November 16 at 4:00 pm (Meetinghouse) will again be Sergeant Mark Metcalf with the National Guard to lead us in a second workshop entitled “Leadership at the next level.” Students who attend this workshop will receive 2 Organizational Development credits toward the HG transcript.

Tuesday, December 1 at 11:00 am (John Hill Chapel) the Harper Gatton leadership program, along with Global Scholars, Equine Scholars, and the Graves Center for Calling and Career will be hosting a CEP/Nexus event with Kelly Watkins who will be speaking on the topic: “Networking for Success – from college to career.” Kelly Watkins is an author and business consultant shares her inspirational messages to businesses across the globe. She is the chair of the International Forum for the National Association of Women Business Owners and is the Past President of the National Speakers Association of Kentucky. (Attendees will receive 2 Organizational Development credits toward the HG program.)

Thursday, February 25 at 11:00 am in the Hall of Fame room the Harper Gatton Leadership Program will host Judge George Lusby, Scott County Judge Executive. Judge Lusby will speak on the topic of leadership to students. Judge Lusby has served as Scott County’s Judge Executive for 20 years and is currently running for reelection. He holds his bachelors and masters degrees from Georgetown College, an Educational Specialist Certification from the University of Kentucky, and an honorary doctorate from Georgetown College. (This talk is worth 2 Personal Development credits for HG.)

Thursday, February 25 – two Harper Gatton Leadership Advisory Council members will attend the Governor’s Prayer Breakfast and Emerging Leaders Seminar in Frankfort, KY. These students have been invited to hear from the Hon. Harold Ford Jr. as the morning’s keynote speaker. Ford served Tennessee in the United States Congress for 10 years. Ford is now chairman of the Democratic Leadership Council, a news analyst for NBC and MSNBC and a visiting professor of Public Policy at Vanderbilt University. For the seminar, Ford will be joined by Justice Mary Noble – Kentucky Supreme Court, Mitch Barnhart – Athletic Director at the University of Kentucky, Colmon Eldridge III – Director of Faith Based Initiatives & Community Service, and Dr. Dan Lewis – Director of Youth & Culture for First Southern Bank. This will be an ongoing event that Harper Gatton students will be invited to from Kentucky’s Office of the Governor so please seek out John Banter if you are interested in attending this event in the future.

Thursday, March 25 at 11:00 am in the Gheen’s room (3rd floor of Giddings Hall). The Harper Gatton program will host Grace Gorrell who has been influential in leadership endeavors in the central Kentucky area, previously working with the University of Kentucky as well as helping to sponsor events such as the Unbridling the Spirit of Leadership in Kentucky through her contacts with leadership guru’s such as Ken Blanchard and John Maxwell. Along with her workings with UK and the leadership conference, Grace started a consulting and training firm, Lead with Grace to offer her programs and expertise to audiences around Kentucky and the world. Grace led a workshop at the 2008 Kentucky Collegiate Leadership Conference and received rave reviews on her presentation. This workshop will be entitled, “Task Management” and will utilize Dr. Ken Blanchard’s “The One Minute Manager Meets the Monkey.” (This workshop is worth 2 Organizational Development credits.)

Wednesday, April 7 at noon in the cafeteria, Georgetown students Alex Eaton and Leah Babik will lead a discussion on   “Student Perceptions of India” for our benefit.  Both Georgetown students will share their experiences of traveling to India. (1 Personal Development Credit)

Thursday, April 8 starting at 5:30pm “Experience India through Food and Film”. UNG, GAC, Global Scholars, and the Harper Gatton program will host an outing to Tandoor, an Indian restaurant in Lexington, and the Indian Food Market adjacent.  During the dinner, students will learn about Indian culture and the game of Cricket (one of India’s favorite).  After the outing, UNG will host an opportunity to view a Bollywood film entitled Bride & Prejudice. Bollywood is the Indian version of Hollywood and the viewing will start at 9pm in Asher 112.  Events can be attended together or separate, HOWEVER, if you want to go to Tandoor restaurant you MUST email Victoria Engelhardt (vengelh0@georgetowncollege.edu) to reserve your spot. (You will receive 2 Organizational Development credits for the dinner and 1 OD credit for the film.)

Tuesday, April 13 at 6:30 pm in the Neal Fireside Room in the LRC, Global Scholars is hosting the former President of India, His Excellency President Abdul Kalam. Former President Kalam will be speaking on the following topic: “Building friendship between the peoples of India and Kentucky – Personal Observations, Perspectives and Recommendations.” (This talk is worth 2 Personal Development credits for HG.)

Wednesday, April 14 at 6:30 pm in the Hall of Fame Room (Student Center); the Harper Gatton Leadership Program along with the Office of Diversity and Ambassadors of Diversity will host Darrell Freeman, chairman of Zycron Inc., an information technology services and solutions firm in Nashville, TN. Mr. Freeman will be speaking on the topic: “There is a Seed of Success in All of Us.” Along with his information technology firm, Mr. Freeman has co-founded Reliant Bank and Pinnacle Construction Partners and has served two terms as the chairman of Nashville’s Chamber of Commerce. Following Mr. Freeman’s talk, there will be a reception with light refreshments served. (Please RSVP to John Banter if you plan on attending this lecture. This speech is worth 2 Organizational Development credits.)

Wednesday, April 28 at 6:00 pm in the Hall of Fame Room (Student Center) the Harper Gatton Leadership Program will hold our end of the year banquet with guest speaker Colman Elridge. Mr. Elridge is the nationwide Vice President of Young Democrats and serves as the Executive Director for Faith Based Initiatives in Kentucky in Governor Beshear’s office. During this banquet will be recognizing those seniors who will be graduating with the Harper Gatton Leadership Medallion. Those seniors who will be graduating with the medallion may invite their parents or guardian to this event. Please RSVP to John Banter if you plan on attending this banquet. Harper Gatton students will receive 1 Personal Development credit for attending.

2008-2009 Academic Year

Saturday, September 20 the Harper Gatton Leadership Program will be hosting the first-ever Kentucky Collegiate Leadership Conference. This conference is available to students from across the state of Kentucky and will include a keynote speaker, leadership workshops, and a case study competition.

Thursday, September 25 at 11 am in the Hall of Fame Room Mr. Terry Moses will speak on first impressions and the importance of good first impressions for leaders. Mr. Moses is the founder of Atlantis Consulting & Services which specializes in helping small businesses obtain Government contracts. Harper Gatton students attending this workshop will receive 2 Personal Development credits toward their leadership transcript.

Thursday, October 23 at 11 am in the Hall of Fame Room (next to the cafeteria) L. Dennis “Coach D” Robinson will be speaking about “Diversity University” showing how developing appreciation of diversity plays into being a leader in college. Coach D is the author of “Leadership: From the Heart of a Coach” and is the CEO of LDT & Associates Leadership Academy. This workshop is worth 2 Organizational Development credits for Harper Gatton students.

Tuesday, November 18 at 11 am in John Hill Chapel, Ambassador George Staples, Director General of the Foreign Service and Director of the Bureau of Human Resources with the U.S. Department of State will be speaking. The Honorable Dr. George Staples will speak about his experience as the US Ambassador to the Republic of Rwanda and his work in rebuilding Rwanda after the horrific genocide which occurred prior to his service in the early 1990s. This opportunity is being offered by the Global Scholars program and is available to Harper Gatton Leadership students. Harper Gatton students who attend will receive 2 Organizational Development credits toward their leadership transcript.

Tuesday, December 2 at 11 am in John Hill Chapel, Dr. John Langan, Joseph Cardinal Bernardin Professor of Catholic Social Thought at Georgetown University, will give a keynote address on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2008. This is a CEP event and is part of the Human Right Conference taking place that day on campus. This address is worth 2 Personal Development credits for Harper Gatton students.

Thursday, February 5 at 11 am in the Gheen’s Room of Giddings Hall, Dan Miller, Georgetown College’s Vice President for Institutional Advancement, will be talking about effective ways to fundraise. This workshop is worth 2 Organizational Development credits toward the Harper Gatton program.

Thursday, March 26 at 11 am in the Gheen’s Room of Giddings Hall, Amy Carrington, Director of the Global Scholars Program will lead this workshop on how art can engage our personal leadership styles. This workshop is titled: “Engaging Art through Transformational Leadership.” The workshop is worth 2 Organizational Development credits.

Monday, March 30 at 4 pm in the Meetinghouse Conference Room, several Human Resources executives will be coming to teach the proper techniques to write professional resumes’ and cover letters. This workshop is worth 2 Personal Development credits and is offered is collaboration with the Graves Center for Calling and Career.

Thursday, April 9Z at 11 am in the Gheen’s Room of Giddings Hall, Grover Mollineaux, an Edward Jones Financial Advisor will be speaking on how to properly save in our economy and how to begin to plan for retirement to create personal wealth. This workshop is worth 2 Personal Development credits.
