 - This course is an introductory survey of the history and culture of Chile at the intermediate level. The course will survey the key events and figures in Chilean history from the mid-fifteenth century to the present. For the most part, material be arranged chronologically and will be divided into the following historical and thematic categories:o          Pre-Columbian Chile (pre-1540)o          Conquest and Colonization (1540-1810)o          Independence (1810-1826)

o          Republican Chile (1818-1891)

o          Parliamentary Chile (1891-1925)

o          Presidential Era (1925-1973)

o          Pinochet Regime (1973-1990)

o          Contemporary Chile (1990-present)

As the breakdown indicates, we will concentrate most of our attention on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In addition to readings (see schedule below), the course will also have an experiential component. For example, our visit to Santiago will include visits to select government buildings, museums, the presidential residence, etc. Our time in Temuco will also involve visits to various historical sites closely related to course content. The course will be conducted entirely in Spanish.
