The Marshall Center for Christian Ministry each year selects a student, faculty member, and staff member for their dedication to Christ and exemplary service in His name. Psychology major Betsie Phillips received the 2013 graduating senior award, and Dr. McKenzie received the faculty award. The staff award was presented to Megan Redditt, a psychologist in our Counseling Center. Congratulations to all three of you!

The Mark Eddy Award (begun in 2007). The Mark Eddy Award is awarded to a senior psychology major who has overcome an obstacle in the context of faith. This award was established in memory of Dr. Mark Eddy. Dr. Eddy joined our department in 2002 and continued to be our friend throughout his battle with cancer. Two of the most important and defining aspects of Dr. Eddy’s personality included his incredibly strong faith and his accepting, optimistic attitude. Undoubtedly these characteristics sustained him and helped him live four years after his diagnosis, instead of the 6-12 months he was given. Because Dr. Eddy embodies the characteristics we hope others in our field possess, we have established this annual award in his name, to be given to a graduating senior who best exemplifies Dr. Eddy’s spirit. Several of our psychology majors were invited to participate in this year’s campus-wide poster session, including those involved in the Honors Program, Dr. Price’s Undergraduate Research course, Service Learning courses, and our top Senior Capstone research students.

Ethan Smith completed GC’s Honors Program this year. Jaime Horne and Ashleigh Barker’s outstanding posters from Capstone were included in the session. Chelsea Riney, Betsie Phillips, Danielle Buford, Ashleigh Barker, Marc Briel, Ethan Smith, and Brooke Hurst completed Dr. Price’s Undergraduate Research course and presented their research.

Becca Short and Brittany Thompson represented the Counseling Skills class by presenting a poster on their service learning experience at Elizabeth Place, a transitional home for homeless women and children in Scott County. Congratulations to all of our outstanding students!

Megan Williams Redditt, GC 2004, lectures to Relationships course

Students in Dr. McKenzie’s 2013 Relationships course recently enjoyed a lecture by Megan Redditt, LPCA, one of the counselors at the GC Wellness Center. Her presentation covered issues and approaches to relationships counseling. She described differences between types of therapy, motivations of those who seek counseling, and statistics and facts related to outcomes. She even led us through an interactive demonstration that allowed us to practice our own abilities at experiencing empathy.

Students in Dr. McKenzie’s 2013 Industrial-Organizational psychology course were visited by GC alumnus (2005) Wes Hunt, Louisville, for his April guest lecture. He discussed his undergraduate work at GC, where he double majored in Psychology and Economics; his graduate school experiences at EKU, where he earned his master’s degree in I/O psychology after completing a master’s thesis on organizational citizenship behavior and aggression; and his current work experiences as a specialist with Mercer.

Psych Bowl 2013

Two groups of students attended the annual KPA conference, held in Louisville, Kentucky.Under Dr. Price’s guidance, Betsie Phillips, Ashleigh Barker, Marc Briel, Brooke Hurst, and Ethan Smith presented individual research projects during the conference’s poster session.

Four additional GC students (Hannah Prassel, Kendall Wills, Kari Steffen, and Ethan Smith) participated in the annual Psychology Bowl competition, losing to overall champion Bellarmine University in the Final Four round. Great job, everyone!
