Three Year Accelerated Degree--Overview

The success and popularity of the Oxford Tutorial Program prompted the creation of a Three Year Accelerated BA/BS Degree Program at Georgetown in the hopes that students appropriately trained at Georgetown College would go on to make a successful application to the University of Oxford to pursue a second BA/BS in two further years. The three year degree  curriculum provides a self-standing superb liberal arts education at Georgetown, and coupled with the second BA/BS from Oxford, students in this program come away an undergraduate education of the highest quality--the breadth of American liberal arts AND the depth in one's discipline associated with Oxford in a total of five years.

Curriculum and Liberal Studies Major

The first year of the three year degree looks very much like that of other Georgetown College students. Three Year Degree students will take general education courses and identify four areas of disciplinary interest to pursue during the second and third years. During the second and third years of the program, students will begin the completion of a minimum of 57 upper division (300-400) level courses in their four disciplinary areas and take practice tutorials to become familiar with the method of study at the University of Oxford. 112 total hours are required for graduation, and the student will graduate with a major in Liberal Studies with an emphasis in his or her chosen disciplines. Please consult the Curriculum link for a more detailed account of the graduation requirements.

Admittance to the Three Year Degree

This program is intended for highly motivated students with a record of significant academic achievement. Though there is some flexibility in entrance requirements,  a 30+ ACT score (1300 SAT) or top 5% standing in the senior class provide a general rule of thumb for successful applications. Students interested in the program will submit a normal application to Georgetown College (general admission application materials can be found here), and if accepted, they will also submit a separate application for the Three Year Accelerated Degree Program. Applications for the Three Year Degree will be reviewed by a committee of Georgetown faculty members, and any applicant which is approved will be invited for an on-campus interview to be completed sometime during the summer prior to admission. Applications and more details about the admittance procedure are available by following the How to Apply link.

Applying for the Second BA/BS

During the fall semester of the third year, Three Year Degree students will work closely with the Director of Oxford Programs to construct a quality application packet for the University of Oxford. The Director will, for example, offer advice about how to choose a college within the broader University, how to complete UCAS and all Oxford admissions forms, and how to approach the interview process. No college or university can guarantee admission to the University of Oxford, but we can take already bright students and with rigorous preparation help them to put their best foot forward in an application. As with college pre-law and pre-medicine curricula, the Three Year Accelerated Degree program prepares students for further studies, but there are no guaranteed admissions. Though the Three Year Accelerated Degree was designed with Oxford in mind, students are certainly not required to apply to Oxford, and we believe that the Three Year Degree would also give an excellent preparation for a variety of graduate school offerings in the United States or abroad. In addition, the Three Year Degree easily converts to a traditional four year degree at Georgetown College should a student desire to finish all four years at Georgetown before pursuing other opportunities.

Costs of the Program

The annual costs for the Three Year Accelerated Degree are no different than the costs associated with the traditional four year degree. The costs of the second BA/BS at Oxford currently approximate those of Georgetown College, but fluctuations in the exchange rate will have some bearing upon the total expense of the second degree. Financial aid packages awarded for Georgetown College do not count towards the second degree, but scholarships and aid are available through Oxford colleges, the University itself, and various organizations promoting international study. The Director of International Programs will provide our Three Year Degree students with assistance in seeking out sources of financial aid.
