Submitted on March 27, 2019
The last time Georgetown College played in the NAIA Division 1 Men’s Basketball National Championship Game, it was much more stressful.
However, the Georgetown College Men’s Basketball Team cruised to victory Tuesday night 68-48, claiming their third NAIA National Championship and erasing the ghosts of that heartbreaking 2016 overtime loss in the championship game.
The Tigers came out strong, jumping out to an early 9-2 lead with 15:47 left in the first half. Carroll College, meanwhile, looked hungry but couldn’t get the ball in the basket, shooting 0-8 in the first 12 minutes of the contest. Long shots led to long rebounds for the Fighting Saints, but they could not take advantage of second chance opportunities.
The Tigers continued their dominance throughout the first half, taking a 35-15 advantage into the locker room at halftime. Dominique Reid led Georgetown College with 12 points in the first half, followed by Chris Coffey, who added seven points. Coffey also controlled the boards, snagging eight rebounds in the first half. The Tigers shot 15 of 29 from the field compared to Carroll College’s 6 of 32.
Carroll College emerged from the half trying to whittle away the Georgetown College lead, but the Tiger defense stifled the Fighting Saints all evening.
As the second half wore on, one theme emerged, toughness. The Tigers’ defense challenged Carroll College at the rim at every opportunity and took advantage of transition baskets throughout the evening.
With 4:40 left in the game, Georgetown College still held a sizable 58-39 lead over Carroll College.
As the clock wound down, it became clear that the Tigers were simply too much for the Fighting Saints. In the end, Georgetown College ran down the clock, making the final score 68-48 over Carroll College.
The win marks the third national championship in the program’s history.
