Georgetown College Introduces New Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program in Pre-Health Studies

Submitted on April 13, 2020

Georgetown College, which has long been known for its ability to prepare undergraduates for medical school and health-care professions, is now offering a new Post-Baccalaureate Program in Pre-Health Studies. The program is designed to provide targeted, personalized studies to students already in possession of a B.S. or B.A. degree who want to have a competitive application to graduate study in such fields as medicine, physician assistant studies, dentistry, nursing, or veterinary medicine.

“We anticipate two types of students would be attracted to this program,”  said Professor of Biology, Dr. Tracy Livingston. “The first is a person who completed a bachelor's degree in an area outside of science and now wants to go into a healthcare field, and needs many if not all of the pre-requisites. The second type of student is one who has many of the pre-requisite courses but needs to boost their GPA for graduate studies and/or a health care field.”

In the program, students can anticipate one on one advising from professors, small class sizes, and researching and shadowing opportunities. The unique educational model that Georgetown College provides its undergraduate students translates into a very personalized course of study for participants in the program.

The highly personal nature of the program also allows for connecting with alumni in a student’s field, MCAT preparation, and resume and application assistance. The goal of the program is to prepare students for graduate and professional school and careers in these health care fields, with all that entails. “Students will be better prepared to apply for the graduate program of their choice, and more importantly will be better educated about their intended field of study,” said Dr. Livingston.

Requirements for admission to the program include: a BS or BA degree from an accredited college or university, an overall GPA of 2.75 and a 3.25 in their last 60 hours of study, a personal statement reflecting a desire to pursue a career in these fields, and one letter of recommendation from a person familiar with the applicant’s academic and/or work background.

Once admitted, students will work one on one with professors and advisors to develop a highly individualized course of study to fit their needs, one thing that truly sets this program apart.  “We have a very strong undergraduate curriculum in the sciences helping students prepare for graduate study,” said Dr. Livingston. “This new certificate program allows students in the program a personalized plan for their intended goals. We will offer shadowing, internships, and research opportunities that will only further prepare them for their next step.”
