Submitted on May 11, 2019

Georgetown College held its annual Spring Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 11th on Giddings Lawn. The graduating Class of 2019 consists of 179 undergraduates receiving their degrees and 106 graduate students receiving their master’s degrees.

The ceremony marked outgoing President M. Dwaine Greene’s last commencement as president of Georgetown College. Dr. Greene encouraged students to remember the values of Georgetown College as they venture out into the real world.

The Commencement Address was delivered by Mr. Mike Lukemire, COO and President of ScottsMiracle-Gro and Georgetown alumnus. In his address, Mr. Lukemire shared with graduates his keys to success, reminding them that a servant-leader mindset is what truly sets them up for success in life.

Along with the conferral of degrees, several awards were presented at today’s ceremony. The Cawthorne Award, which honors excellence in teaching, went to Dr. Homer White, a mathematics professor at Georgetown College. Dr. White always pushes and encourages his students and is always willing to learn more himself.

The President’s Award, presented each year to an outstanding senior, who has excelled both in the classroom and as a Christian servant-leader, was awarded to Emily Altman, who plans to begin medical school at the University of Kentucky this fall.

At the end of the ceremony, a special award was presented to retired Associate Vice President of Marketing and Communications and the “Voice of Georgetown College,” Mr. Jim Allison, in recognition of his many years of service to the College.

In addition to the commencement ceremony, Baccalaureate Service was held Friday, May 10th at 7:30 P.M. in the Chapel. Featured speaker, Reverend Bob Fox implored students to remain humble, Christian servants, and to treat all people with the same love and kindness, no matter their standing in society.

Congratulations to the Class of 2019, their family, and their friends.
