Dreaming of Florida

It’s mid-November, 50 degrees outside, and raining. It has Nicole Maynard ’21 dreaming of Florida. Recently accepted into the heralded internship program at Disney, she’s poised, confident, and likes meeting new people. It’s easy to see why Disney would want her.
She’s incredibly active on campus, serving as president of the GC Chorale, vice president of the Georgetown College Activities Council, and she’s heavily involved in her sorority, Sigma Kappa.
Internships at Disney are very competitive and sought-after for a reason. An industry-leader in several different areas, from hospitality to entertainment and media, Disney allows students to see firsthand what makes a successful, boundary-pushing company thrive.
Influenced by a fall break trip to Disney and several friends who had participated in the program, she applied. Now, that decision suddenly means Nicole will spend a few months in the most magical place on Earth. She leaves for Florida in early March and will return in late July.
The internship opportunity partly came about thanks to the flexibility provided by Georgetown College to students in designing their program of study. Of course, it also came about because Nicole is a gifted student and wanted to spend a bit more time in the place she’s come to love. “I don’t necessarily want to graduate early because I do love Georgetown a lot,” she says. “The program would allow me to be at Georgetown for the full four years.”
The internship also serves as a trial run for where she wants to end up in her life. “I want to end up in Florida eventually.” When asked why she wants to end up in Florida, she glances out the rain-sprinkled window and sighs. “It’s warm.”
She’s also interested in astrophysics and, in particular, could see herself working at the Kennedy Space Center one day. Wherever she ends up and whatever she ends up doing, she’s making the most of the opportunities she has in front of her and is a model Georgetown College student, a shining example of the poise, drive, and thoughtfulness displayed by students who receive this unique, championship-level education.
