GEORGETOWN, KY – Three-time NAIA Player of the Year and standout Georgetown College quarterback Eddie Eviston was officially inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame this past weekend.

The Northern Kentucky native rewrote the record books in his four seasons as a Tiger. He holds school records as all-time leader in passing yards (9,282), career completion percentage (60.9), touchdown passes (83) and touchdowns responsible for (132). He is also ninth on the all-time rushing list with 1,610 yards on 334 carries and third in rushing touchdowns with 37.

The Tigers were 50-4 with Eviston under center. The offense averaged 48.6 points per game in those four seasons. Only one game of those 54 did the Tigers manage only to score once, the next lowest offensive production was a 20-0 win over Northwestern Oklahoma State in the 2000 national championship game. GC only scored in the 20s five times during Eviston’s tenure, 12 times in the 30s with nine games of 60 or more points.

He guided the Tigers to three straight national title games – 1999, 2000 and 2001 – winning the latter two. In the past several years, Eviston has shown his abilities to coach the game as well. He returned to his high school, Newport Central Catholic, as head coach in 2010. In three seasons the Thoroughbreds won two state titles. Less than a month ago, he accepted the position to return to Georgetown as the new offensive coordinator and quarterback coach.

Eviston was inducted into the Georgetown College Athletic Hall of Fame back in 2007. He becomes the eighth player and/or coach from Georgetown to be inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame. Others are: Kenny Davis, Bob Davis, Charles Grote, Donna Hawkins, Susan Johnson, Jim Reid and Cecil Tuttle.

                The Board of Trustees of Georgetown College today unanimously voted for the institution to apply to become an NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division II member. Georgetown is currently an NAIA member school.

                This decision caps a year-long process of evaluation by the College’s Board of Trustees which involved input from coaches, students, faculty, alumni, NAIA and NCAA officials, and others. According to Head Football Coach Bill Cronin, “It’s the right move for us, and a real sign that Georgetown College has deepened its commitment to athletics – not only for football but also for all of our athletic teams. NCAA: DII status will help and challenge our entire athletics program.”

                Earl Goode, the College’s Board Chair, noted “Our excellent experiences and successes in the NAIA have positioned us for the next chapter of our college athletic experience.”

                Athletics Director Brian Evans agreed, and added “I am excited for our athletes and for our coaches. Wearing Georgetown College on our uniforms will continue to be a source of pride.”

                Application to the NCAA will be made by June 1; a decision on Georgetown’s application is anticipated by July 15, 2012.
