GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Kids ages 6 to 18 can join the fun at a free USTA/KY tennis festival/clinic on June 24 at 6:30 p.m. at Georgetown College’s Lackey Tennis Center. Participants of all abilities are invited to spend the evening learning how to play tennis or improving their game in a friendly, fun-filled atmosphere that celebrates this sport of a lifetime.

Children 10 and under will play using a youth format that downsizes the court and equipment while using lower-bouncing tennis balls that allow kids to rally from the get-go. Older children will play on regulation-sized courts.

GTA_logoInstruction, rackets (if needed) and equipment will be provided, courtesy of Kentucky Bank, Lexington Tennis Club and USTA-KY, and the event will be coordinated with the help of local partners from Georgetown Tennis Association.

The festival/clinic is one of several scheduled in counties throughout the Bluegrass in June and July. These events are being held in conjunction with the Kentucky Bank Tennis Championships, the state’s only professional tennis tournament, which will take place July 21-27 at the University of Kentucky’s Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex. This USTA Challenger-level tournament draws players from around the world and has helped start the careers of tennis greats such as John Isner, Marion Bartoli, Lleyton Hewitt and Melanie Oudin.

Louis Prichard, president and CEO of Kentucky Bank, shared the bank’s enthusiasm about offering the USTA tennis festivals/clinics in conjunction with the Kentucky Bank Tennis Championships.

“We are so pleased to be able to offer this level of tennis foundation to the children in our communities,” he said. “The children who participate will have fun while receiving tennis instruction from very talented, experienced players whose love of tennis is contagious. This is a great opportunity for Kentucky Bank to give something very unique to the children in our communities.”

Participants in the tennis festival/clinic also will have the opportunity to sign up as ball kids for the Kentucky Bank Tennis Championships, whether it is for an afternoon or throughout the whole week. The experience draws many kids back year after year and provides a great way for young people to get involved. Training is provided.

“We are very excited about the opportunity to celebrate tennis in Scott County, and we appreciate the Georgetown Tennis Association’s help in coordinating this event and are grateful to the tournament’s new title sponsor, Kentucky Bank, for making this happen,” said Brooks Lundy, director of the Kentucky Bank Tennis Championships.

The Lackey Tennis Center is located at the Georgetown College Athletics Complex, near Toyota Stadium.
