GEORGETOWN, KY – After a year away from competing, Georgetown College cheerleaders stormed back, finishing third out of five squads in Mid-South cheerleading competition held in early March in Pikeville, Ky. The host Bears took home the championship for the second year in a row, while Campbellsville University finished second.
GC was the only all-female squad in the competition. Rounding out the competition was University of the Cumberlands in fourth and Lindsey Wilson College fifth.
The Tigers also brought home several individual honors such as Freshman of the Year for Kaya Kelly. The LaGrange, Ky., native was selected based on her performance during the competition and is GC’s first time winning a singular cheerleading honor since Kaitlin Johnson won MSC Cheerleader of the Year two years in a row. Kelly is also the first Tiger to ever earn this honor.
Sharyl Higgins and Colleen Robinson were Georgetown’s representatives on the 10-person all-conference squad.
Four of the seven eligible Tigers, sophomore or higher with a 3.25 grade point average or better, were named to the MSC All-Academic Team. Bringing home the honor was Hayley Hamman, Mieko Smith, Lindsay Pelfrey and Scarlett Shelby.
GC is a youthful bunch. Of the 12 members, five are freshmen and four are sophomores. First-year coach Vicki Stacy has no seniors and is excited about the coming years.
“We are building the foundation and this is a great group of young ladies with which to do this,” said Stacy. “The future is bright. We were the smallest squad Sunday and had no men, yet the routine we did and the passion we showed earned us third. We have tryouts coming up in April and are looking to build on what we started this year.”
Keep watching for tryout information – date, location and requirements. It will be posted on the Tiger athletic site.
