GEORGETOWN, KY – “The liberal arts are more important than ever. . .”
This quote is taken from New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman’s writing in the latest edition of The World is Flat and is a message targeted to prospective students.
In keeping with this message, the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) has announced the launch of a new Twitter feed, @SmartColleges, for the public information campaign on the liberal arts, Securing America’s Future: The Power of Liberal Arts Education.
The Twitter feed is aimed primarily at high school students, their parents, and guidance counselors. The feed features “avatars”—college student “Libby” and counselor “Art”—who will engage in real-time comments and questions on Twitter about the liberal arts. Through these characters, CIC will post data, quotes, and content from the campaign website and other sources.
The overarching goals of the social media initiative are to:
- Circulate the “good news” about liberal arts education;
- Correct misinformation;
- Challenge attacks on the liberal arts;
- Answer questions;
- Re-direct users to sources of accurate information;
- Tweet CIC and campaign information; and
- Retweet (amplify) positive messages that support campaign objectives.
Twitter users are invited to “follow” the feed, re-tweet messages, and post comments using #LiberalArts. Please share this message and help get the word out about the benefits of a liberal arts education. As Mr. Friedman states, “the liberal arts are more important than ever… [O]ur secret sauce comes from our ability to integrate art, science, music, and literature with the hard sciences. That’s what produces an iPod revolution or a Google.”
