Dr. Rooke

Georgetown, KY – Georgetown College is pleased to welcome Old Testament scholar Dr. Deborah Rooke of Regent’s Park College, Oxford University, as this year’s McCandless Lecturer. Dr. Rooke’s presentation, tentatively titled “From Wild Man to War Hero: The Biblical Samson according to Milton and Handel,” will be Thursday, April 19, at 4 p.m. in the Ward Room, first floor, Ensor Learning Resource Center. It is open to the public, free of charge.

Formerly Old Testament lecturer at King’s College London, Dr. Rooke is now a fellow of the Oxford Centre and Christianity and Culture at Regent’s Park College. Her previously published books and articles reflect her research interests, including the Old Testament cult and ritual, gender and feminism, and Handel’s use of the Old Testament in his oratorios. Dr. Rooke is also a musician of some note.

A 3 p.m. reception in the LRC foyer precedes Dr. Rooke’s lecture.

The McCandless Lecture was established when Georgetown College and Regent’s Park College in the University of Oxford formed a partnership in 1999. Each year, the schools exchange lecturers. The lecture series was started with a

donation from the late Mrs. June McCandless in memory of her husband O. Carlysle McCandless. Both were alumni of Georgetown College.
