2008 Outstanding Student Leaders

Seniors Ashley Hatcher and Rachel Thomas – named winners of the coveted Outstanding Student Leader awards April 24 – were further rewarded by the presence of their parents in Hill Chapel for Student Life Honors Day. Ashley was especially surprised that hers traveled all the way down from the Chicago suburb of Naperville. The Hatchers’ special connection to President Bill Crouch was added incentive (read below).

Rachel ThomasRachel Thomas was joined on stage by her parents, Dr. Michael and Celia Thomas, and grandmother Wanda Thomas, all of Elizabethtown, and President Bill Crouch, left.

Rachel’s leadership at the College began with her stint as Student Government Association president in 2006 and will culminate May 10 when she addresses the commencement audience as Senior Class President. A Christian Leader Scholar and the Wilma Reed Memorial Scholarship recipient, Rachel was also active in Sigma Kappa sorority and Concert Choir. A Biology major and Chemistry/Music double minor, she will attend Pikeville College’s School of Osteopathic Medicine this fall.

Ashley HatcherPresident Crouch, left, had a special reason to join Ashley Hatcher – one of his President’s Ambassadors – and her on stage because he performed the wedding ceremony for Blair and Rena Hatcher years ago when he was their youth minister in Cary, NC.  Ashley, a Psychology major, will wed Naperville’s Nick Babladelis (a senior at Wake Forest University) on June 28 – the date of her parents’ anniversary – at Knox Presbyterian in Naperville, IL.

Also, well known for his engagement with students at Georgetown College, Dr. Michael Cairo received the Lindsey Apple Student Life Appreciation Award from Provost Allen at the same ceremony. Cairo, the faculty advisor to the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, also won a $500 prize. An Associate Professor of CairoPolitical Science, Cairo is also the College’s Program Coordinator for Securities Studies and is GC’s Coordinator for the University Scholars Program with the Patterson School of Diplomacy, one of our University of Kentucky partners. Lindsey Apple is a popular, former faculty member who has been very involved with our Regent’s Park College partnership at Oxford University, England.
