Submitted on February 18, 2020

The James A. and Martha R. Brown Charitable Foundation, Inc. and Georgetown College are proud to announce a gift from the Foundation to Georgetown College of $1 million to provide scholarships for students from Harrison, Nicholas, and Robertson Counties in Kentucky and for the renovation of the Georgetown College Conference Center. In celebration of this significant gift, the college will name the Conference Center, “The James A. and Martha R. Brown Conference Center.”

James A. and Martha R. Brown were residents of Cynthiana, Kentucky, having relocated there upon James’ discharge from the Air Force when James accepted a job with the Kawneer Company. Soon, however, his talent as an entrepreneur redirected his career. For the next 60 years, he and Martha acquired numerous and varied businesses and were engaged in banking, the operation of nursing homes, retail, real estate development, and hotel ownership. In addition, he was a Pilot, a city commissioner, and two-time mayor. Martha was also actively engaged in the businesses, concentrating primarily on the operation of their nursing homes. Both were extensively involved in their community, serving on boards, committees, and civic organizations. Martha received the 1988 Citizen of the Year Award from the Cynthiana-Harrison County Chamber of Commerce. Martha died in 2006, and James resolved to make a positive difference for future generations through the creation of the Foundation.

Along with the Conference Center renovations, the gift is made to the college for use in fulfilling its mission of preparing students to engage in their life’s pursuits with thoughtfulness and skill, by providing an exceptional educational experience in a stimulating intellectual environment. A significant portion of the gift will be dedicated to scholarships for students from Harrison, Nicholas, and Robertson Counties in Kentucky.

President of Georgetown College, Will Jones, said, “Georgetown College gives students a championship-level education of the mind and heart. At a time when the cost of attending college is on the minds of families, this gift will offer students from these counties the opportunity to experience an education that prepares them to succeed professionally and personally, like James and Martha Brown. This is an extremely generous gift! And, it will make a significant difference in the lives of our current and future students.”

Through this gift, the James A. and Martha R. Brown Charitable Foundation, Inc. and Georgetown College, will impact the lives of Harrison, Robertson and Nicholas County students for many years, providing more students access to the championship-level education of the heart and mind that Georgetown College is known for.
