For the past six years, Georgetown College has presented a Ken Chafin Award for lifetime achievement in the ministry at its annual Pastors Conference held in the Spring. This award is named for an internationally-known Baptist minister and former Georgetown trustee Ken Chafin.
This year, the award was received by Rev. Ira McMillen, Jr. in celebration of his remarkable journey in the ministry.
Mr. McMillen began his journey in 1941 as a graduate of Georgetown College. He continued his education at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and received his Masters in Theology in 1944.
McMillen served for many years in Kentucky and Ohio as a pastor, church planter and administrator. At the age of 65, while at Greenview Baptist Church of Florence, Kentucky, he retired from his pastorate.
Since his retirement, Mr. McMillen has held 19 interim pastor positions. Mr. McMillen spends most of his time now caring for his wife, Jeanette, of 64 years who currently resides in a nursing home in Georgetown.
In past years, other recipients of this award include: Harold Pike 2001; James Baldwin 2002; Jim Henry 2003; Robert and Edwina Fields 2004; and four in 2006 at our Ministry Reunion: Harold Bratcher, Helen Brown, Thomas Smoot and Grundy and Jean Janes.

The annual Pastors Conference is a time of fellowshipping and worshiping in a relaxed and casual environment with pastors and lay ministers from near and far. Pastors and lay ministers use this time to be energized and inspired, for replenishing and reflection; as well as meeting and making old and new friends alike.
The 2007 Conference included sessions led by an international pastor, a female pastor, and a retired Hebrew scholar. Music was led by 1988 GC grad, Rev. Rod Ellis of Frankfort, Kentucky.
Our opening session on Monday evening, as well as every morning, began with praise and worship music; a presentation by Dr. John Durham, a retired Hebrew scholar from Virginia, on Art and Exegesis based on his recent book Rembrandt and the Bible; and preaching by Dr. Joel Gregory, author and preacher from Fort Worth, Texas. His sermon title was A Hole in the Wall.
Each day bible study was led by Dr. Simon Perry, Pastor of Bloomsbury Baptist Church in London, England. His topic was Temptation and the Ministry.
Our speaker for Tuesday evening following the Banquet was Rev. Lesley Krieger, Founding Pastor of Project X Church in Bloomington, Indiana. Her topic was Paul, Penguins and Project X. Wednesday morning concluded with praise and worship, a presentation and Bible Study.
Next year’s conference is scheduled for March 31st – April 2nd.
