A Message from the Coordinator
The
Meetinghouse at Georgetown means different things to different
people.
For students, the Meetinghouse is a place where they have class, talk to career counselors, or meet for activities related to Campus Ministry.
For faculty, the Meetinghouse is a setting for meetings, for meals with potential faculty, the sponsor of a summer seminar on teaching and vocation, and the name of grant that funds the development of academic courses that encourage spiritual discernment and challenging learning experiences.
For alumni, the Meetinghouse means an opportunity to speak to
students about their careers during “Life After Georgetown”
events, enjoying a banquet with students from the Christian
Leaders Scholarship program, or being invited to a reunion for
ministers and church workers.
Since the inception of the Meetinghouse in 2001 through the
generous support of the Lilly Endowment, programs focusing on
encouraging faculty, students, and alumni have become a
prominent part of the Georgetown experience. With additional
funding from Lilly, the Meetinghouse programs are beginning a
new phase of development.
In this new phase the Meetinghouse will be comprised of five
centers: Campus Ministries, Center for Church and Community,
Graves Center for Calling and Career, Faculty Center for
Teaching and Vocation, and the Ministry Student Formation
Center. Each of these centers will administer programs specially
designed for their target group. The center directors, Provost
Rosemary Allen, and the Coordinator of Meetinghouse Programs
(yours truly) make up the Meetinghouse Council which will
provide overall direction and support for these programs.
Georgetown College has always been a welcoming place for women
and men to explore their vocation in terms of career, ministry,
missions, and further education. It is the express goal of the
Meetinghouse Programs to expand and enhance this aspect of the
Georgetown experience to the greater glory of God and the
thriving of our communities.
