Faculty Retreat

December 10, 2007
Faculty Writing Workshop

General Statement

The Faculty Center for Teaching and Vocation is designed to continue programs for the theological exploration of vocation as funded by two grants from the Lilly Endowment, beginning in 2001. Its special focus will be the faculty of Georgetown College, but some of its programs will also impact a wider circle of scholars.

The Faculty Center will collaborate with other departments of the College as represented on the MH Program Council, to sustain initiatives that bring the religious and spiritual resources of the College to bear upon questions of calling and career.

The Faculty Center will reside in the Office of Academic Programs and be supervised by the Provost of the College.

Faculty Center Staff

Center Director: Roger Ward
The Center Director is appointed by the Provost and reports to the Provost. The Director is responsible for the general overview and coordination of the Faculty Center Programs and may be assigned the writing of the annual report to the Lilly Endowment. The Director chairs meetings of the Fellows and receives the end-of-year reports from each Fellow. The Director, in consultation with the Provost, nominates candidates to be Fellows of the Faculty Center; those nominees must then be approved by a majority of the Governing Council (once established).

Fellow for New Faculty Orientation: Doug Griggs
This fellow is responsible for structuring and leading a fall teaching group for new faculty that focuses on the development of teaching approaches appropriate in a small, liberal arts college with a Christian emphasis. The issue of a theological exploration of vocation will be part of this orientation.

Fellow for Faculty Mentorship: Regan Lookadoo
This fellow is responsible for establishing and maintaining a program to provide ways for all faculty to seek enrichment of their teaching vocation. Elements of this program would include teaching groups, reading groups, course evaluation/observation programs, and other initiatives as developed by the Director.

Fellow for Seminar on Vocation: Sheila Klopfer and Roger Ward
This(these) fellow(s) are responsible for teaching (or recruiting teachers) for the Seminar on Vocation, a course designed for those in the CLS program but open to all students. Course will integrate programs and personnel of the Graves Center for Calling and Career, and may be taught in either Spring or Fall semesters.

Fellow for Young Scholars in the Baptist Academy: Roger Ward
This fellow is responsible for designing and directing the annual summer seminar for young scholars who either are Baptist or teach at Baptist institutions, including Georgetown.

Administrative Assistant:
A professional secretarial position will provide support services, data management, budget coordination, and program assistance for all of the Faculty Center programs. The Administrative Assistant will also provide support for other MH initiatives as needed, maintain accounts of all expenditures, and provide the annual financial report for the Lilly Endowment.

Note: The Fellows of the FTCV could, after due deliberation and upon strong consensus and with the support of the Provost, expand the work of the FCTV by either launching fresh initiatives related to teaching and vocation or by incorporating into the work of the FCTV existing programs of the College that they deem consistent with the mission of the FCTV.
