Biography

Dr. Laura Hunt completed her undergraduate education at Furman University in South Carolina, and received her master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Kentucky.  Her academic interests include the Spanish American novel and ecocritism (the study of the relationship between literature and the environment).  Dr. Hunt has presented her work at conferences and in Hispanic Journal.  She is also interested in U.S. Latino Civilization and Culture and Hispanic Linguistics, which she teaches at Georgetown.

Dr. Hunt enjoys planning events for her students, serving as advisor to campus groups, and working with other teachers on educational technologies.  She won the Rollie Graves Technology Award at Georgetown in 2010.  Dr. Hunt is also an avid promoter of study abroad, has led study abroad trips to Temuco and Santiago, Chile with Georgetown College students. Dr. Hunt serves on the Board of Directors for the Kentucky Institute for International Study (KIIS).

Biography

Dr. Adela Borrallo-Solís a native of Cáceres, Spain, received her Ph.D. in 2005 from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She has taught Spanish language and literature at Kalamazoo College (1996-1997),  Michigan State University (1998-2000) and University of Colorado at Boulder (2000-2005). Dr. Borrallo-Solís is currently an Assistant Professor of Spanish Language and Literature and Coordinator of the Spanish Program at Georgetown College. Her primary field of interest is 19th century Peninsular Literature, with special emphasis on Benito Pérez Galdós. She has presented numerous papers at national and international conferences and has published in Tropos, Confluencia, Hispania and Estreno. She is currently working on several projects on Galdós and Spanish Films.

Biography

Dr. Jana Brill received her Ph.D. in 1983 from the University of California, Santa Barbara in French, with an emphasis in linguistics.  From 1984 to 1991 she taught French language, phonetics, applied linguistics, and history of the French language at the University of Louisville, where she also served as coordinator of lower division classes and instructors.  Dr. Brill is currently Professor of French at Georgetown College, Kentucky.  Her research interests include historical and current shifts/variation in verb usage in spoken language, personal letters, and folktales. She has published in French Review, Romance Philology, and the Kentucky Philological Review, among other publications.

Biography

Dr. Rebeccah “Bess” Dawson received both her Ph.D. (2011) and MA (2006) in Germanic Languages and Literatures from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She completed her B.A. at Davidson College in 2003. She studied at universities in Würzburg, Mannheim and Berlin during her undergraduate and graduate career as well as taught English and German as a Second Language in Dresden. Dr. Dawson is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of German and the German Program Coordinator in the Department of MCLC. During the Summer 2013, Bess was able to teach on the KIIS program in Bregenz, Austria.  Her primary areas of interest are early 20th century German sport literature and film, the philosophy of sport as well as Second Language Acquisition Theory and Technology in Pedagogy.  She has presented at both national and international conferences, most recently at the German Studies Association and Midwestern Modern Languages Association. She was also invited to present at conferences in both Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Porto, Portugal.

Bess is currently working on several projects, including an anthology on German sport film, papers on Nazi sport ethics and converting her dissertation in a book manuscript. Moreover, she has published her work in journals and collections.

During the Fall 2013 semester, she is teaching German 101, German 201, German 310: Cultural Traditions from Germanic and Christian origins to the early 1600s, and German 399/499: The Contemporary German Scene: Jugend- und Popkultur. In Spring 2013, she will be teaching German 102, German 230, German 319/419: The Nineteenth Century: Restoration, Revolution, Resignation, Realism and German 345/445: Literature, Culture, Politics, 1905-1945: Rolling with the Punches: The Role of Sport in Creating New Germanies: 1905-1945.

Biography

Dr. John Henkel grew up in Virginia, where he graduated from the College of William and Mary (B.A., 2002), then moved to North Carolina, where he earned his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2005, 2009). Before coming to Georgetown, he taught at the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome (link), a unique study-abroad institute for students of Latin and Greek, which he had also attended as an undergraduate. At Georgetown he teaches all levels of Latin, Classical Greek on demand, courses on classical literature, and Foundations 111, a freshman-level skills course designed to introduce students to the intellectual tradition. His research interests are primarily in Latin and Greek poetry, with special emphasis on Vergil and the other Augustan Latin poets. He has given numerous papers and invited lectures and is currently working on a book manuscript, Metapoetic Allegory in Vergil’s Eclogues and Georgics.

Biography

Dr. Sigrid Suesse, a native of Kassel, Germany, received her MA and PhD in German Language and Literature in 1979 from the University of California, Irvine. Between 1977 and 1983 she taught German at the University of Kentucky and Georgetown College and German, world literature and English composition at Transylvania University. In 1987 she received a Master of Science degree in Computer Science from the University of Kentucky where she taught Computer Science during the 1986/87 academic year. She worked as a staff programmer for IBM and Lexmark both in Lexington, KY and Böblingen, Germany from 1984 until 1994 when she joined the faculty of Georgetown College. Her teaching and research interests include German culture and literature, Turkish-German culture, the German Green Party, the Holocaust, the Faust-theme in literature and film, learning and language acquisition theories and learning and teaching methods, and the application of computer tools in language learning and in the teaching of culture. She has published a book on the drama Nathan the Wise by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729 -1781), the German man of letters, theorist of the arts, and Enlightenment proponent of religious tolerance, and is currently working on computer applications for the language and culture classroom.

Dr. Suesse is President of the American Association of Teachers of German, Kentucky Chapter (AATG-KY).
