Variable field elements:
010 Library of Congress Control Number (i.e. n 12345678)
040 Cataloging source (i.e. DLC $c DLC)
005 Date and time of last transaction (i.e.19910716055451.8)
02x ISBN / ISSN number
043 Geographic area code
050 Call number (of a series, a range for subject headings, author number, etc.)
1xx Main heading (see below for Main heading information)
100 Personal name 155 Genre term
110 Corporate heading 180 General subject division
2xx and 2xx are complex see and see also refs
4xx See from tracings (See refs); do not use these headings, use Main heading — same pattern as 1xx
5xx See also from tracings (See also refs); valid headings — same pattern as 1xx
64x Series information. Numbering examples & practices, tracing practices, etc.
640 Series dates of pub
6xx Can also show source data (name of the item this record was based on, complex notes, etc.
7xx Heading linking entries
8xx Alternate information
Use of the information in the fixed field used in conjunction with the information in the variable fields can sometimes tell you a lot about the heading. For instance a Series: code of c will tell you that the heading is a “Series-like phrase.” Often these will have “Use as quoted note” in a 6xx field.
Some fixed field codes to be aware of:
Type: type of record: z = authority
Main heading information:
The headings that you see listed in the 1xx fields are the main headings for the authority record. On a bibliographic record they can be used in different ways. Some examples of how a main entry on an authority record can be used on a bibliographic record:
