8xx Alternate information

Use of the information in the fixed field used in conjunction with the information in the variable fields can sometimes tell you a lot about the heading. For instance a Series: code of c will tell you that the heading is a “Series-like phrase.” Often these will have “Use as quoted note” in a 6xx field.

Some fixed field codes to be aware of:

Type:                type of record:   z = authority
Enc lvl:             encoding level:  n = complete authority o = incomplete
Auth status:      level of establishment code:  a = fully estabished (see manual for others)
Subj:                 subject heading authority code:   a = LC b = LC children (see manual)
Series:             type of series code (see manual)
Geo subd:        direct/Indirect geo. sub. code:    [blank] = not sub. d = direct i = indirect n = not applicable
Rules:               cataloging rules used:   a = earlier b = AACR1 c = AACR2 d = AACR2 compatible
z = other n = N/A

Main heading information:

The headings that you see listed in the 1xx fields are the main headings for the authority record.  On a bibliographic record they can be used in different ways. Some examples of how a main entry on an authority record can be used on a bibliographic record:
