MARC Bibliographic Record Common Fields

Below is a view of the MARC record as you would see it in Voyager with an explanation of the content of the common fields you may encounter. OCLC has a slightly different format. Line numbers and content of fields will be relative depending on what information is present and what type of record you have – monograph, serial, computer file, etc. X in a field means the information in that area may vary. There are two examples at the end of this document.

1: Fixed field elements: on a Voyager record these are in drop down boxes when you are editing or creating a record. The 001 field is the Voyager Bib id number.

035 OCLC record number is moved to this field during import

040 Cataloging Source Code – who input/edited the record (our code is KGG)

020 ISBN (International Standard Book Number, format: 01234567890)

022 ISSN (International Standard Serial Number, format 1234-5678)

028 Publisher numbers (usually used for media and scores)

041 Languages

050 Library of Congress call number

082 Dewey Decimal call number

090 Locally assigned LC call number

092 Locally assigned Dewey call number

099 Local classification / call number scheme

049 Local holdings information (our default code is KGGM)

1xx Main entry heading

100 = Personal name 110 = Corporate name
111 = Meeting name 130 = Uniform title

245 Title : ¹b subtitle / ¹c statement(s) of responsibility.
(Note: subtitles of serials are generally placed in a 500 note.)

246 Alternate title information

250 Edition statement

260 Place of publisher : ¹b Publisher, ¹c date of publication.

300 Extent of item : ¹b Other physical details ; ¹ c size.

310 Current publication frequency (serial)

321 Former publication frequency (serial)

362 Dates of publication and/or sequential designation (serial)

440 Series statement ; ¹v Series numbering

490 Series statement:

indicator 0 means series not traced, i.e. 490 0_
indicator 1 means traced differently, i.e. 490 1_ look for an 8xx field.

5xx Notes:

500 General note

504 Bibliography note

505 Contents note

510 Citation / references note (serial – tells where you can find this indexed or cited)

6xx Subject headings:

600 Subject Personal name

610 Subject Corporate name

611 Subject Meeting/conference name

630 Subject Uniform title

650 Subject Topical

651 Subject Geographic

690 Local subject – uncontrolled

7xx Added entries:

700 Personal name

710 Corporate name

711 Meeting/conference name

730 Uniform title

740 Uncontrolled title

780 Preceeding title (serial)

785 Succeeding title (serial)

8xx Series traced differently entries: used when the series is traced differently than what appears on the item. Unfortunately these DO NOT appear in the WebVoyage record, but you can see them in the MARC view.
800 Personal name series
810 Corporate name series

811 Meeting/conference name 830 = Uniform title

8xx Holdings, Location, Access information:

852 Holdings location and call number info.

856 Electronic (Internet) information (url, location, etc.)

866 Holdings

Note: the fixed field area is easier to read on an OCLC MARC record than in Voyager. It is reproduced below just as an example. This is the fixed field from a monograph record, other formats are different.

In our Voyager records the OCLC number in the left corner is moved to an 035 field. And Voyager has some other record information not in this record.
