Become an ESL Teacher or Learn to Work with English Language Learners in Your Classroom

Person holding a globeSince the early 2000s, the United States Department of Education has annually designated English as a Second Language as a Kentucky teacher shortage area. ESL teachers fulfill a critical role in P-12 education, both as student and family advocates and as leaders within their schools. Our ESL endorsement program is designed for educators who are interested in becoming ESL teacher leaders in their schools or districts and increasing their marketability.

ESL Endorsement:

  • Requires only 5 classes and 1 Praxis exam
  • Can be completed in one year as a stand-alone certificate
  • Can also be completed as part of our Master of Arts in Education Teacher Leader or Rank I School Improvement Programs
  • Is offered completely online (field hours are required in Kentucky schools)
  • Courses emphasize current ESL research-based best practices and are aligned with TESOL International Association standards

Kentucky schools also need general educators who can meet the needs of second-language learners. The ability to infuse ESL teaching techniques into every lesson helps close achievement gaps for English Language Learners (ELLs). Our ESL cognate is designed for general educators who are interested in effectively reaching ELLs, but do not wish to pursue the ESL endorsement.

ESL Cognate:

  • Requires only 4 classes
  • No Praxis required
  • Is offered completely online (field hours are required in Kentucky schools)
  • Individual cognate courses can be taken at any time
  • Can also be combined with our Master of Arts in Education Teacher Leader or Rank I School Improvement Programs
  • Increases marketability statewide
  • Helps teachers connect with recent immigrants and their families
