After your advising appointment…

Consider your academic goals

  • What subjects do I want to take? Do I want them to count for my major, my minor, my general education requirements, or do I want them as electives? Is there an academic focus not available at GC which I can study while abroad? How will I fit this study abroad experience into my overall degree plan?
  • Please note that you will not typically receive quality points for courses transferred in from institutions abroad. Exceptions to this include credits earned through GC’s Oxford Program, or courses taught by GC faculty abroad.

Consider financial plans

How much will my time abroad cost? What costs are included in the advertised program costs, and what do I need to pay separately? How will I pay for it—parents, financial aid, travel scholarships? How do I plan a budget? Consult with the Financial Aid Office once you have completed a tentative budget, and/or if you need to apply for a student loan.

 

Apply for applicable Travel Scholarships

There are many study abroad scholarships out there, and it is well worth the effort if you end up receiving scholarship money. Think of the search in terms of hours/effort spent vs. potential payoff — the “per hour” rate is not bad at all! Start searching now!

What about a Passport?

You will need to apply for a passport well in advance of your travel abroad. Expect this process to take at least 4-6 weeks. For up-to-date information on application, fees, etc. visit: http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html

Consult Parents

Your parents are probably going to be investing in many ways during this time of your life as they support your plans, so it’s a great idea to keep them involved and informed.
