Teacher Leader MA or Rank I with Literacy Specialist Endorsement (P-12)

The Literacy Specialist (P-12) endorsement program can be completed  only as a component of the Teacher Leader Master of Arts or Rank I programs.  This program meets the International Reading Association’s guidelines for the preparation of reading specialists and literacy coaches in schools.  Because this program prepares candidates for supervisory positions, professional certification is a  requirement by the time the candidate completes their program and applies for the endorsement.

Twenty-five hours of clinical experience is also required  by the time of program completion.   The Literacy Specialist (P-12) program is a component of both the Teacher Leader MA or Rank I School Improvement programs and both programs have a total of 36 credit hours of sequenced coursework and clinical hours.  All candidates conduct classroom research in the area of literacy instruction. Additionally candidates take courses related to research-based practices in literacy instruction (K-12); the history of educational policy in literacy instruction and trends in the field; two practicum (clinical) courses related to assessing and facilitating students’ literacy development; an additional practicum in literacy leadership and coaching; a course on coaching and a course on writing.

Candidates must pass a PRAXIS exam to be recommended for state endorsement. This program is a blended program; the four courses that are a core component of the master’s degree are delivered online.  Most of the literacy courses are blended courses; up to 50% of class sessions in blended courses can be face-to-face on campus.
