The state of Kentucky considers a cognate to be a set of related courses/experiences. In some cases when the state does not offer an endorsement in an area, colleges design a cognate to provide candidates with knowledge/skills in a “focused area.” The Reaching All Students cognate focuses on a range of diversity issues. The content covered represents professional skills and knowledge that is in demand in schools, and is something all general educators would benefit from and often are not exposed to (i.e., ELL students, universal design for lesson planning and IEP’s, etc.) as undergraduates.
Candidates take a total of four three-hour courses selected from one of each of the following categories:
Group 1 :
Group 2 :
Group 3:
Group 4:
This cognate can be taken as a stand-along program or as an imbedded component of either our Teacher Leader Master of Arts or Rank I, School Improvement degree programs. Candidates fill out the online admission application and either select TLMA with Reaching All Students cognate, Rank 1, School Improvement with Reaching All Students cognate, or the cognate only . If they wish to pursue the cognate only , they indicate they are a “special student” when selecting a program type.
