The Endorsement Program in Gifted and Talented is designed to provide teachers with the knowledge and skills to work with gifted and talented students in P-12 classrooms, as well as to provide professional leadership in schools and school systems in effective and differentiated instruction for gifted and talented learners. Two options are available for candidates seeking endorsement in Gifted and Talented.
All courses in the Gifted and Talented Endorsement Program are carefully designed to assure synchronous experiences to the Conceptual Framework, the professional content standards, the state performance standards, and Georgetown College‚Äôs program model: to develop competent and caring educators, committed to a spirit of service and learning.
The Endorsement Program in Gifted and Talented consists of a 12-hour core which includes courses in:¬† Foundations of Gifted Education (where students study the historical background of the concept of gifted education, theories of intelligence, developmental issues specific to intelligence, and developmental issues specific to gifted students including special challenges)¬† Curriculum and Instruction in Gifted Education (where students examine the research literature related to curriculum design/delivery and develop curriculum of their own)¬† Differentiating for Gifted and High-Achieving Learners in the Regular Classroom (where students learn the principles of differentiated curriculum design and differentiation with an emphasis on the learning needs of gifted students)¬† Practicum in Gifted Education (which involves working directly with gifted students and being observed by college faculty).
Candidates must also pass a PRAXIS exam in order to be recommended for this endorsement.¬† Candidates applying for endorsement¬† only complete the online admission application and identify themselves as a “special student” pursuing endorsement only.
