FAQ
Who is an ideal Global Scholar candidate?
An ideal Global Scholar is enthusiastic about international learning, interested in earning a liberal arts bachelor degree, and will take advantage of all the resources and opportunities provided by GSP and the College! Through our four year program, a Global Scholar will gain a better understanding of how their chosen career is impacted by globalization.
What if I have not identified a career I want to pursue?
The Graves Center for Calling & Career at Georgetown College will help students discover the right major and career for them. Both the Graves Center and GSP provide experiences and resources for Scholars in their area of interest. Together, we want to give Scholars an advantage over job-market competition by graduation.
What should I major in?
Global Scholars have the flexibility to choose from any of the 40-plus majors and minors offered at Georgetown College. No matter the major, we can show you how your liberal arts education can be used in a professional career. This also allows Scholars to change their major and still remain in the Global Scholars Program.
Does Georgetown College offer international affairs classes or an international affairs degree?
The Global Scholars Program does not offer international classes or an international degree, but classes with varying international topics are offered through Georgetown College’s Academic Departments. Scholars may consider obtaining a specific degree in Commerce, Language and Culture, where students combine business, language and culture in an integrated and reflective manner.
Are scholarships available?
All accepted Global Scholars receive a $1,000/year scholarship as long as they are active participants in the Program, maintain academic standards (3.0 cumulative GPA) and remain in good standing with the Program.
Are internships available?
All Global Scholars are required to complete two internships that combine their major with their international interests. The Program and the Georgetown College Graves Center for Calling and Career help students find internships and provide Scholars with the tools necessary to do their own internship research, too. Most internships are unpaid, but students can sometimes receive class credit for them. Internships can offer valuable learning and networking opportunities!
Can I room with other Global Scholars?
Global Scholars can request other Global Scholar roommates. If you are interested in rooming with another Scholar, be sure to indicate this on your housing form and GC will do their best to accommodate requests. This is optional. Many Scholars do room together and many choose not to. It’s up to you!
Can I visit the Global Scholars Program?
We encourage all prospective Scholars to make an official campus visit and to include a meeting with the Global Scholars Program Leadership Team! To schedule your visit, call the GC Admissions Office at 800-788-9985. Be sure to request an GSP appointment. Consider making your visit an overnight: stay in the dorms with other Global Scholars, attend classes and try out the cafeteria! That way you can really get a feel for what campus life is like.
Do I have to reapply to the Program every year?
Accepted Global Scholars are members of the Program and do not need to reapply as long as they are full-time Georgetown College students, are active participants, meet all academic standards (currently, 3.0 cumulative GPA) and are in good standing with the Program. We understand that circumstances sometimes change; students might reevaluate their international interests and no longer wish to participate in the Program; however, we are seeking students willing to commit to four years in the Program.
Will I have time to participate in other campus activities, work and volunteer?
Our Global Scholars are very active on and off campus! We have Scholars in fraternities, sororities, academic team, student government, athletic teams, campus ministries and more. Many Scholars also have part-time jobs. The Global Scholars Program does need to be a top priority and a serious commitment, but with good time management skills, students are able to keep a balanced life.
Does the Global Scholars Program include study abroad?
We do not require Scholars to study abroad, but encourage them to pursue overseas opportunities if it fits into their four year plan. For Scholars considering study abroad, we challenge them to include an internship in their study abroad experience. This can be done through the numerous international program providers connected to Georgetown College’s Office of International Programs. International internships are becoming increasingly popular for college students as they will help students standout to future employers.
What is Directions and what can I expect?
Directions pre-orientation trip is an off-campus excursion where you will get to know your fellow Scholars and participate in activities where faculty, staff and upperclassmen will help you transition into college life. Directions is full of fun and team-building activities, which include ropes course, canoeing, boating, and service. The camp we go to is very nice with air-conditioned facilities and great food.
Global Scholars always attend Directions III, which is the last trip. It is usually held in the days immediately prior to New Student Orientation in August so you will have the opportunity to move onto campus early and familiarize yourself with campus.
