Jane Hope Oldham Fields ‘39

Jane Hope Oldham Fields"Georgetown has had a much-cherished and lasting positive influence on my life. I am increasingly excited about and thankful for the rich traditions and promising future of our College.

I consider my financial support of Georgetown College an investment in an important Christian outreach.

The seeds of my love for Georgetown College were planted when my parents attended a Baptist conference here in the early 1900s. They fell in love with the college and sent my brother and me to Georgetown years later.

My life was enriched immeasurably by gifted and caring Christian professors and administrators as well as scores of bright students. A number of Georgetonians have been among my dearest friends since the 1930s."

"As the daughter, sister, niece, and cousin of Georgetown College alumnis well as being a campus neighbor I am honored to support the future of this special institution. My contributions to the college's scholarship program are a great investment in the future of two Kentucky communities important to me.

By encouraging the enrollment of students from Ashland, Kentucky, a place I called home for many years, I can share this life changing opportunity with future generations. Georgetown, Kentucky, my birthplace and present home and the welfare of the college are intertwined. Giving to this historic institution is a great privilege."

"Georgetown College is unique in its Christian heritage as well as its progressive goals for the future. In the scholastic climate when many colleges and universities are compromising their values, Georgetown strives to hold onto its heritage while striving to meet the modern requirements for success in all fields of endeavor."

“I remember as a freshmen at Georgetown College and discussing with my parents the costs of tuition, books, room and board and how expensive it seemed to be. I recall my Grandmother telling me that had it not been for willing donors to Georgetown College over the last 150 years or so, the costs associated with my education at that time would have been much greater. I have remembered what she said that day and have tried to make a gift of some sort to the College every year since graduation.”

"When I first accepted a teaching appointment at Georgetown College I thought I would stay for a few years and then move into a clinical practice. It is a tribute to the college that I stayed until retirement. I found myself a part of a Christian family that values learning, intellectual development and the academic, emotional and spiritual welfare of its members.

Through my tenure here I have had the opportunity and privilege of meeting scores of students and of being a participant in their growth and their lives. True, as a professor, I taught them but I was also a recipient of their ideas and opinions which served to challenge me in my own professional development. I guess that is what is we mean by “scholars developing scholars.” We motivated each other to develop in our respective disciplines. I was fortunate to have students who graciously shared their lives with me and some of whom continue to do so, even after their graduation.

The administrators and my fellow professors formed a network of support and friendship that fulfilled the promise of Christian collegiality. While teaching at Georgetown College I can honestly say I looked forward to each day, with perhaps the exception of the days I had to grade papers. It is possible that the situation I have described is true of other college campuses and I hope it is, but I can only speak to my own experience."
