Georgetown College’s volleyball team will  head to Sioux City, Iowa for the chance to play for a NAIA national championship. On November 17, the No. 13 Tigers (34-3) defeated Xavier University at Louisiana (22-8) in four sets (23-25, 25-16, 25-15, 25-20) in the Davis-Reid Alumni Gym. The Tigers lost the first set to the Golden Nuggets but stayed calm and beat down their opponents for the much needed victory.

Even though their opponents had a strong defense, GC was still able to find holes in Xavier’s defense. Several players recorded double digits kills, including Allyson Wilbourn who had an impressive 18 kills, Caraline Maher just shy of her with 14, and Kathryn Smith with 11 on the night. A key factor in the Tigers’ win was the fact that they had a hitting percentage of .333, but they held XULA to a mere .137 percentage.

On the other side, the Tigers took care of business on defense. Rebekah Moore was influential on keeping XULA at bay, recording 24 digs. Lindsey Wise had 13, as all as Kristen Schellhaas getting 12 in the match.

Georgetown College now knows the teams they will be playing for poll play for the tournament. The Tigers have to play undefeated, No. 1 Concordia (30-0), No. 12 Indiana University East (43-3), and Morningside (26-9). All of their games start at 5:45 p.m. CST, and teams have three consecutive days of play, starting on Nov 27.

In the six pools, there are four teams, and out of the teams only two will advance to single elimination play. The top team in each pool will earn a bye. Georgetown finds itself in the national tournament for the 15th time. GC has been to six Elite Eights and a national championship game run in 2009.

NeuLion, which is the official video-streaming company of 12 NAIA championship events, will be streaming the single-elimination matches.
