As a child, Katya loved to draw and paint. However, her interest in gymnastics took over when she was selected to attend one of Russia’s prestigious Sports Schools. This career came to an abrupt end when she was injured in a fall from the bar. However she went on to become a first rate swimmer and had no leisure to pursue her interest in art until after her marriage to Valery Gridnev in 1984 and the birth of their son, Fyodor, two years later. In 1993, she was recognized for her artistic talent through acceptance to the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg without the usual prerequisite of a formal art training from one of the Russian Art Schools. By the end of 1994, her first year at the school, she won first prize for her portraits. Since completing her studies in St. Petersburg she has exhibited with the Royal Pastel Society at the Mall Gallery, the Alberti Gallery, and many other venues throughout the US and Great Brittan. She now lives with her husband Valeri in Newbury.
