This Chinese tiger was created during the seventeenth century. Tigers in Chinese art symbolize courage and bravery and are believed to have the power to ward off demons. This object was made with jade and has a dark orange coloration. The recumbent tiger, with front legs tucked beneath his body, has its head turned in a backward glance, his tail curled, and is lying across his rear haunches. The tiger’s body is carved with incised details.
