A lekythos is a slim Greek vase often used to hold oil or perfume. Traditionally it was used as a decorative object in funeral or religious ceremonies. The lekythos’ shape consists of one handle and a narrow mouth. This particular lekythos was produced in the 5th century BCE during the Archaic period. It has a cylindrical shape with a thick conical mouth and a pedestal base. The object is decorated with a black and red glaze and a coin-edge design at the base of the neck.
