This Indonesian figure was created between the fourteenth and fifteenth century during the Majapahit period. During the Majapahit period trade flourished and there was a vast extension of the borders. It was the last of the great Hindu empires. The figure shown is believed to be the Hindu folklore god Ganesh. He is the god of knowledge, intellect, and wisdom. Ganesh is mostly portrayed as pot bellied with the head of an elephant. This particular terra-cotta figure is decorated with a headdress and costume. It has also been restored.
