Equestrian Figure
7th century BCE
Width: 4 1/2 inches

This ancient Greek object consists of a human figure riding on a horse. It was created in the 7th century BCE during the Geometric period. During this period, artists used abstract, geometric forms such as cylinders, pyramids, cubes, and spheres to represent human and animal anatomy. This technique is clearly illustrated in the horse and rider figure with its simplistic shapes and minimum detail. Artists in the Geometric period also experimented with negative space, so the viewer could study the object on an aesthetic level from all view points. The horse and rider are decorated with a red stripe design.
